I am starting some private lessons that I am splitting into 3 groups made up from Pratthom and Matthayom schools. I am teaching for 50 baht an hour to classes of 20 students (classes are for 2 hours). I am teaching in a small town and my students have little money. Because of this I am going to buy 3 sets of books (to start) and use them either scanned and shown on a projector or with a document projector thingy (please forgive the terminology, but I have forgotten what they are called). There is no way the students parents will be able to afford the books, and I will not be able to supply them because of the profit margins. I was thinking about buying Lets Go for the beginners going onto side by side and New interchange for the most experienced. What do you think of the choice of text books? Do you think that there are any suitable to use in 2 or more of the grades? I am not going to teach by age I am going to assess, then split students into ability classes.
Any help with suggestions for other books or materials (or just advice ) would be greatly appreciated. I have read about other books on here but I am really looking for books to cross abilities to work with the 3 classes.I am kindda resolved to having to buy 3 sets though, a major investment for me at this stage. Is it feasable to buy just the 1st books, plus materials in each section, or do you thgink I should buy them in one go. OK I'll shut up as I am rambling.
Cheers
Neil
Why not scan the pages you need, import them into a word document and create your own booklet. That's the way I do things. I make booklets with lessons for the month of teaching. Next month a new booklet.
Obviously, when your students pay per semester, you can make semester booklets.
Good choice going with 'Let's Go'. I could nit-pick and moan about that series, but that would just be me moaning and nit-picking 'cos that's what I do. 'Let's Go' is great. I used it for 4 years before it was decided by the powers that be that a series of photocopied pieces of shit by an Indian firm was the way forward.
And if Orient Black Swan rings any bells with any posters, then you know where I'm coming from; and I know where you are.
'Let's Go' is brilliant, particularly if you use the workbook as well, but it's not a deal-breaker if you don't. If you are on Page 61 in the textbook then it will be page 61 that they'll turn to in the workbook. It's a nice touch.
The songs are good. You get to do singing!
Anyway, I like the sound of what you're doing. The best of luck to you.

Heaps of pdf books, audio tracks etc. Lots of simple stories in flash format too. (Has flicking pages and soundtracks) ... great for a projector/comp setup.
If you can organize or have somewhere that I can upload to, I've got a fair amount of stuff already scanned that would probably do you fine. But it would be too much to email - especially if you want listening files as well. Anyway, PM me if you're interested.
Incidentally, is the gig 50baht an hour per head or 50baht an hour for the whole class? If it's the latter - you might as well just teach 'em for free!
