    Failing Students?

It's been "suggested" by the powers above (the idiots that run this uni, not God) that we should pass all of our students, no matter how poor they perform on the final exam. Is this common in Thailand? Are any teachers out there allowed the luxury of failing their students? Here's a memo we got today:

Please be informed regarding the final exam. If any students in your classes fail the courses you teach, they must resit. However, if they fail in the first resit, you must give them workbooks or worksheets to study and do during the holidays preparing for the second resit which will take place around the last week of May.

Please make all the first resit test and workbooks or worksheets ready for students by the morning of March 13, the last day that students will be at school.

    Thank you for your cooperation.
So if I fail a student, I have to be the one to do more work? Most teachers are just going to pass their students so they don't have to spend 2 weeks writing a workbook for students who have no hope of passing anyway. I'm not complaining or anything, but this just seems ridiculous.

At my uni we are lucky. We can fail all who do not make the grade. Most of my classes are good this term. But one foundation class in the middle of the day had the worst group of unmotivated students. They took their final yesterday. 11 from 40 will fail. They will be back to take the class in the summer, or first term next school year. I dont have to see them again.

We've been told we can fail any students who cannot pass a second re-test. I practice, I rarely end up failing students if they jump through the hoops I set them, no matter how poorly they perform.

The way students get failed at our school is on discipline. If students are badly behaved all year to a well-rounded selection of teachers, it comes up in a meeting and the teachers as a body decide to fail that student on their behaviour score.

Some teachers get put in the disconcerting position that even if the student has behaved fine for them all semester they are forced by the others to fail them. Conversely the worst behaved students cannot be failed on behaviour by an individual teacher if at the teachers meeting they have not decided they deserve to fail.

It all kind of defeats the point of having individual teachers' discipline scores IMO.

Why don't they kjust have a sit-down and decide the scores to give everyone! It would save a lot of marking and correcting tests and all the admin that goes into comiling scores. I think I will suggest this to the management here if they start meddling again (which they no doubt will!) We could knock testing on the head and have an extra two weeks holiday
Excuse me for not taking this seriously .....

Or how about just giving students the test beforehand? Or the answer key? Where's the learning accountability in this ideology? It just defeats the purpose of teaching, IMO.

Of course, saying that, most (if not all) my students will pass. They're actually very bright. But other teachers I work with are not so lucky to have good students, and next term I might have to fail several students.

Don't forget the words of John Dewry ( 1930's) "Education is the standardisation of human beings"

Or the Words of R D Laing ( 1960's) " Education in practice has never been an instrament to free the mind and spirit of man , but a vechicle to confine and constain him"

Every Education System Camp Sausage Factory in the world has picked up this philosophy ( me thinks )

One private school I was at when I was in China ( China has very similar Education to Thailand ) Used to reduce teachers pay on the basis of how many students did not do well during the Black exams ( they were called black exams because there were a lot of students walking around with black eyes afterwards ) This exam used to determine exacly what one would do for the rest of there lives , doctor ,Lawyer shoe shine boy , begger.

Good luck Zevon, if you succeed you will have alot more respect from your students. Even the students you teach want the dumb asses who dont even try to fail.

Its no big deal if you fail. But its a damn big deal if you dont do your best to keep from failing.

If students are allowed to pass, even though they are way below the level of ability, it just makes the system a sham.

But....many places in the world do this.

Even the U.S. educational system - long known for being occupied by idiots - practiced the concept of "social promotion," meaning that even if a student was lost, lazy, or just plain failing miserably, he/she should be promoted so they can stay with their age group and friends, and not get their feelings hurt.

Therefore we have Johnny the Grad who can't read, write, or find the Mississippi river on a map. (Well, he is American.)

    the system a sham
    You forgot "is."

All kids pass here. It would hurt thier feelings and make their families look bad if they were held back. It's also possible little Somchai's very wealthy parents may take their money elsewhere!

I've seen THai teachers blatantly give the answers to tests after the li'l buggers failed the first two times.

Cheating, lying, money, greed, mis-education.....par for the course here. They will regret it when African nations surpass them.
