I know a few metal bands that are alright. I like AC/DC, Pearl Jam, Kiss, Def Leopard, and a few others. I don't listen to them all that often..only when I'm in the mood.

Classic rock is better.

pearl jam are not metal....they were grunge which was a sub-section of rock

kiss and def leppard were ok but they weren't metal. maybe hard rock with a lot of hair and make-up

There are some truly hilarious questions on this forum. "Is Red Hot Chili Peppers metal?" "What about Pearl Jam?" I mean Jesus, people have been beaten mercilessly for better questions than these.

Gonna disagree with Zehner on the AC/DC. They're not metal. Otherwise spot on records. Slayers guitars are amazing.

Never really been into death metal myself. But I really love some of the metal/hardcore/punk crossover bands out there. Less scream, more technical and overall a bit less "chunky" than more more traditional old school metal. There is some real talent lurking out there in this crossover genre. Some examples:

I think what happens is that the defintion changes and the goalposts get moved over time. No way would I ever consider zeppelin metal though, not in any time. They are a rock band, good for their time but really pretty average in the grand scheme of things, particularly relative to some of the talent that exists out there today. Of course people who grew up with this music will object to this. Music is always at its best when it was what you "grew up with."

But the truth is that music progresses. Things have gotten harder and faster overall, and these old bands just fall out of the metal genre, even if they were there to begin with. Perhaps in their time they were hard enough to be metal, I just don't really think at this point they qualify. Classic rock would be where I categorize them, if I had to.

Agreed. But we are talking about metal, so....

Oh, and speaking of Clutch I just saw them play a show about three months ago. They warmed up for Coheed and Cambria. Fall of Troy was also there. Fall and Coheed were both great.

Clutch, on the other hand, was just god awful. Halfway through their set they were getting booed consistently, besides the rednecks at the show who were singing their lungs out at every repetative chorus. Even though I would be hard pressed to ever boo a band (I just think its rude), in truth the booing was well deserved. Clutch reminded me of a band that would have been good, if only the year was 1970 instead of 2008. Maybe they just didn't fit the theme of the slow. Regardless, hands down one of the worst live acts I have ever seen.
