Like someone's pointed out already(I think  ) a lot of the stuff that was called metal back in the day(70's, 80's), you young whippersnappers now call easy listening.
Kiss as an example, I'm pretty sure they were considered 'heavy metal' at the time...Poison, Ratt, Cinderella, etc., etc. Now some of em are called hair bands or whatever. Now Journey and some of the similar groups pb mentioned I'm pretty sure weren't ever considered any type of metal, but times change. Some of these groups Robi and Z mention when I look em up and listen to them all I get is a headache. 
I guess I'm turning into an old fart.

Kiss, Ratt, Poison, etc. were "glam" for me and my metal pal(s) back in '88/'89, and as such were to be derided and mocked. Thrash was the all-encompassing influence in my life at the time. Stuff like Blue Oyster Cult, Zeppelin and Deep Purple would be fairly easy compared to the racket bands come out with now.
But "old fart" eso? Napalm Death have been going 25 years now. Hawkwind made an ungodly party-clearing noise longer ago than that.

^yeah I didn't like a lot of it then either......I always liked the ballads better than anything.
More into Pink Floyd and Rush and the like.

 Love that track. Saw the Mark II line-up play when they reunited in Manchester in '93. Blackmore was awesome. He's in a ye olde "hey nonny no" dance around the maypole type of English folke band now. Weirdo! |

btw robi I'm with you 100% on AC/DC. I know in the Bon Scott era they were definitely considered heavy metal headbangers.
When I'm in the mood for metal, they're about as heavy as I like it. Past that it all seems like excessive noise, screaming and thrashing about.

I'm not a metal fan in any sense of the word. In fact, I was shocked to see that Iron Maiden was still on the road and about to be featured on CNN in a special.
I hate most metal...loud, screeching, preteen nonsense.
