Re: What are you listening to right now?

It's unavoidable. I'm not really listening to it, but the sound of the boy racers roaring along the road about four or five streets away with their geeky weeeeepop turbos and phat drainpipe exhausts leads me to believe that sooner or later I'm going to hear a big thud plink plink followed by a weee-oh weee-oh weee-oh when the cops go to sort out the stupid shits who have wrapped their car around a tree.

Dover Beats the Band

By Joyce Porter, dramatised by Paul Mendelson.

Inspector Dover, with less than total enthusiasm, investigates the murder of a mild-mannered philatelist in a holiday camp. His sergeant, however, cares a bit too much. But as the investigation begins to uncover a sinister conspiracy, even Scotland Yard's laziest detective becomes determined to catch the killer.

Chief Inspector Dover ...... Kenneth Cranham
Sergeant McGregor ...... Stuart McQuarrie
Dr Hirst/Nora Hull ...... Joanna Tope
Captain Maguire/Sven ...... Michael Mackenzie
Sir Egbert Rankin/Rupert Pettit ...... Finlay McLean
Inspector Telford/Osmond ...... Nick Underwood
Sandra/Doreen Knapper ...... Lucy Paterson
Mavis/WPC Elvira Marchmount ...... Samantha Young

Arthur Dent watches as the clouds scud away in the lorry's wake. The rain ceases, allowing Arthur to dry off.

All Rob McKenna knows is that he can't remember his last sunny holiday. All the clouds know is that they love him, they want to be near him, to cherish him, to nurture him and to WATER him. For Rob McKenna is, in fact, a Rain God.

Kirsty Young's castaway this week is the actress Jill Balcon.

She has the voice of an old friend - and it's not surprising, she was a BBC radio announcer during the war and has been acting and performing poetry consistently since.

Poetry has always played a central role in her life. She was only 12 years old when she first saw the poet C Day Lewis. He had come to judge a poetry-reading competition at her school and although he was more than twenty years her senior, he was, she says, the most beautiful man she had ever seen.

They were married for more than twenty years. Since his death in, 1972, she has maintained her own acting career, continued raising their children - the acclaimed cookery writer Tamasin and Oscar winning actor Daniel - and also worked hard to preserve his legacy.
