My vote is for Jimi is for new ideas tried, new ground broken and overall influence.
Who gets your vote and why?(I couldn't find a guitar playing smiley!)
"You can't HAVE everything. Where would you put it?"
- Stephen Wright
"Cellar Door"
It's this one.
I'd vote for Jimi as well. He made the lead guitar and the guitar solo the focus of rock music from the summer of love through the 70's. Clapton gets an honorary mention because of his longevity and collaborative work. I was surprised Jeff Beck didn't make your poll list. His use of feedback and distortion with the Yardbirds was revolutionary.
Rock on!

He's too obscure to be 'influential' outside of Africa,
but I go out on my limb: Franco was the greatest!!!

Thank you!
I figure the most copied is the most influential. That leaves SRV, Ry Cooder, EC, and a whole lot of others out. Unless coping a copier has more merit than copying one more original (if there is such a thing).
Jimi for sure
Danny Gatton
Albert King
BB King
Freddi King
Martin Luther King
Carl Perkins
Bo Diddley
Chet Atkins
Les Paul
And #1, Chuck Berry
Carlos Santana
Lee Ritenour. Couple I think I have had an effect on me and the style of the guitar.
Too long in Exile, too long not singing my song.
Too long like a rolling stone, Too long in exile
Too long in Exile, baby you just arent my friend.
Too long in Exile my friend, Baby you can never go home again.
Lee learned in school. But Carlos is in there for sure. Gota love that guy. Then there's Eric Johnson, Zappa too. This thread is a tuff one. Just because they're good doesn't mean they're influential. Those who play simple licks and melodies attract more disciples just by their being simple, easy to relate too, easy to copy.
Slash. I also like Sambora (Bon Jovi)
I like garcia
"Having sex is like playing bridge. If you don't have a good partner, you'd better have a good hand."
- Woody Allen
Exactly.
Or maybe a better way to phrase it would be: Just because they aren't considered influential on a mass scale doesn't mean they don't shred like hell.
As a guitar player, here are a few of my personal biggest influences:
Claudio Sanchez
Dimebag Darrell
Trace Bundy
Rob Ramos
and many many others....
Influence on a mass scale is overrated.
Lots of good names on here. As a guitarist myself, I was most influenced by Jimi. But, Redhaze, you're right...there are many popular guitarists out there who aren't necessarily all that skilled.
That moron lead guitarist of Poison comes to mind, can't even remember his name!
Keep the posts comin people.![]()
You mean there's another guitarist other than Jerry (Garcia) ?
Once is great.
Twice is too much.

15 years ago I couldn't rival Jerry but in a dream, today I'd smoke him.
