Why DJ-ing is no longer a cool profession.

How refreshing, a "real live DJ" who is actually aware that the only skills you need are
a) an ability to count to four
b) being able to recognise which tunes are at a similar tempo, therefore will mix together

The DJ worship has got on my nerves for years. What's so special about playing someone else's music? To then say your creative and special is a joke. I've had this response from plenty of "dance music" afficiondos (is that how you spell it).

"Nah man, knowing exactly which tune to put on at the right time, to keep hundreds (or maybe thousands depending on the venue) of 'eds going for it IS special".

Bollocks, a club full of e- munchers, all screaming when the tune changes is akin to mass hysteria. You could probably play "agadoo" and they'd all put their arms in the air and scream. Try it, munch a few pills and go to a dance club, you'll probably have a great night. Then go the week after, completely straight... fuck me it's boring, and it hasn't got boring as the years have taken it's toll, it always was. Regardless of media-hype, movies on the subject and fondly looking back. Places like Hacienda, Conpiracies and Thunderdome (when I wuss 17/18)WERE SHITE if you couldn't score that night and ended up going out anyway.
Yeah, I know I've gone on a bit, but as I said, the DJ worship has wound me up for years.

How are we defining raves here? Is there anyone in the place trying to define ANY kind of clubbing where e's and repetitive beats are involved NOT as raves?

Was glamming it up at Miss Moneypennies on a couple of cheekies not raving?

I though when Reclaim the Streets took over Trafalgar Square for a rave was pretty cool.

...and this lot - DiY were pretty cool up my direction in Notts, though their DJ's never made a big deal about DJing

I used to know a DJ who was unaware that every time he spoke to you he spat in your face.

I know some pretty awful mobile wedding DJs in the UK...but they still get the work!!

This DJ worship is a bit over the top, but I do wish they were worshipping me!

BTW I agree that DJ worship is crap to a certain extreme, but if someone has good taste in music and they entertain me with it all night with a certain degree of skill in the mixing, then it's got to be worth something.

What bigraegun said. Goes for me too. I could never understand why people went to dance parties and never supported live music. :chug:

However I also listen to bands like New Order who generations ago wouldn't have been considered music due to the synths.

I could never understand why people worship the guitar as the be all and end all of popular music...especially as dance music is often performed live at dance parties.

I generally don't support so-called live (read band/indie/guitar) music, as I think it mostly sucks.

Right, but if people want to pigeonhole music I like such as drum and bass or techno by saying it's all shit, I'm quite prepared to say something equally as ludicrous about whole swathes of so-called "real" "live" music styles just to illustrate my point.

I wonder also, if there's a single one of you lot who can put your fingers on the cutting edge of 2005 cool, and tell me what band epitomises it?

I'm not sure I can, but since this thread is full of people that know what is and is not cool then maybe explain it to an out of touch old fart like me.

(and no I'm not interested in what bands are in the top 40)
