Hi Everyone
I'm a musician and am new to Bangkok. I will play some concerts in local venues(one booked already) but I have quite a big problem......I don't have a guitar. I was going to bring mine from back home with me but the airline refused to take it unless I bought an extra seat for it - way too expensive! I havent got alot of spare cash so am looking to possibly borrow/rent one of someone for a short while until I earn enough money to buy one/it. I am genuine, honest and trustworthy. Or alternatively, if anyone knows of someone who is selling one, a good classified website or a good second hand music store please let me know. Any info would be much appriciated.
Thank you
you flew half way round the world to do concerts, but you left the guitar at home?
that's some really poor planning
fred
did someone say guitar?
Here is my reply from last June in response to somebody looking for a guitar in Bangkok. Good luck!

So I just bought a guitar today. I went to the area in the link provided. There is a whole bunch of music shops. There are shops selling acoustic and electric guitars, basses, violins, drums, keyboards, brass instruments, ukuleles, as well as those phins that I like so much(acoustic and electric!) A good starting point is the intersection of Thanon Bunsri and Thanon Atsadang. The music shops start there and then continue south on Th. Atsadang for a while.
There are maybe 15 or so music shops. It's really great and you can try out anything you want. I spent about two hours there comparing brands and prices. There are Chinese knockoffs as well as the real deals. Chinese brands run anywhere between ~2-10K baht. The "real" brands are closer to ~15-30K, with some upwards to over 60K.
If you are interested in those Thai phins, they run about 1200 baht for an acoustic and about 2-2.5K for an electric. I almost bought one because I think they're cool and they're incredibly inexpensive, but I was really there to get an acoustic guitar. I go to play a few though.
I know I'll probably get some shit about what a crappy guitar I bought, but anyways, I ended up buying "fina" brand guitar(yes, lowercase.) Sure, it was made in China, but it feels, sounds, and looks really good. I could have bought a similar real brand guitar for about 15-20K, but 3000 baht was one hell of a steal. Been playing it most of the day since I got home and I'm still impressed with it. It was originally 4000, marked down to 3200, but I talk the guy down to 3000 for the guitar, some picks, and an extra set of Gibson strings.
If you're in the market for a guitar, acoustic or electric, or other instruments, check out these shops. Remember, if you buy a guitar at a mall store, you're also paying for their expensive real estate and other markups.

Well............didn't come specifically to gig just thought it would be a good sideline while I'm here and like I explained the airline wouldn't let me take mine on the flight so my friend had to take it back home from the airport for me.
---Update---
lots of jokers on this site but NokYai aside, not many who would like to help someone with a genuine problem.
You can't possibly know that, Hendrix.
Be grateful that people are keeping your thread bumped, you snarky get. You're the one that couldn't manage to get his luggage on a plane - something that thousands of people a day do, all over the world, with no problems - even the really dumb ones - so get off your high horse, eh?

Well I can only go from the evidence presented so far on this thread and your post only goes to confirm my statement.
I am well aware that thousands of people per day check all their luggage onto their own flight but do all these people have musical instruments and then encounter stubborn members of staff who flatly refuse to take the instument unless the passenger buys an extra ticket? Please don't suggest that I am dumb because I had the misfortune to end up in this situation and then didn't have the funds to buy myself out of it.
Umm why would you think a guitar is carry on?
Another mistake is this thread, making yourself vulnerable
and
I guess trying to sell you my vintage Yamaha E1010 analog delay (10k bht) is out of the question.
Plenty of okay to good 2nd hand guitars from around 5k bht

Etihad. Already checked in a bag so they wouldn't let me check another (1 per customer). They wouldn't let me take it on as hand luggage unless I bought another seat. I was prepared to pay extra but not buy another seat. Thought it would be easy enough to rent or borrow a guitar for a bit until I found my feet /made some money from some gigs but things havn't turned out to be as easy as I expected.
etihad lost my baggage BTW. Morons. Glad I didnt check in my axe now.
Cheers
Where is your concert/gig going to be? Are you a solo guitarist? How much are they paying you for your gig?
The reason I ask is, if you are playing a pub/restaurant then it is likely there will be other bands playing also. By someone a drink and ask to use their guitar.
