A good book I read a couple of years ago was Slithering South by Steve Van Beek. Its about his attempts to navigate the river from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. It gives a good insight into the various peoples in Thailand and is full of humour.

You know its going to be an 'interesting' journey when he goes to collect the boat that he commissioned, to find its made from solid teak and its too heavy to pick up! TiT!

And best of all, its not at all pretentious! I think PB would enjoy it too.

Isn't it people who are pretentious, not books and inanimate things? Although there are a couple of items of furniture in my apartment that I suspect have ideas above their station...

[quote="Clubfoot"]I just finished reading "Road Rash" by Ken May. It's about tourism in Asia and the impact of westerners. I enjoyed the read. It was kind of interesting, althought I haven't heard much about the book or author anywhere.

Ken May - I am sure is the same Ken May who used to be a member of this forum. He posted 100 posts and was a very intelligant poster (something that is now sadly missing).

He sent me some of his short storys which were great but were lost in my last big computer crash.

murakami- the wind up bird chronicles.

    fantastic book. mind-altering, disturbing, unhinged

in some ways-horrible. read it and have your dreams haunted.

" His Dark Materials" Trilogy, by Philip Pullman. Supposed to be kids books (received an award in the kids category), but excellent.
    1)The Northern Lights
    2) The Subtle Knife
    3) The Amber Spyglass

Just today started reading A Short History Of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. Anyone else read it? Never read any of his travel books before.

I haven't read the tome you refer to but I have got involved with the small-town America one and the Notes from a Small Island one. Dare I say it but I find his experiences a bit dull. He's a fat man with little penchant for adventure and his observations come across as a fat man with little penchant for adventure. Give me Paul Theroux anyday.

I'm reading Waterland by Graham Swift. I recently read Last Orders and found enough in it to see it through to the end. I found Waterland equally baffling at the beginning but I'm getting into the structure now. I particularly like the end of history stuff having had many a tussle with Fukuyama and metanarratives myself in the past. Well thought out. I'm enjoying it...

Got it at home, but not started reading it yet!

I'm reading something by Stephen J. Cannell (sp?) at the moment, the creator of amongst others The A Team, so the book should be well good!

Dostoyevsky is genius, funny yet depressing... one of my mum's friends at uni killed herself after reading C and P... handle with care...

Right now I'm reading the Ajarn.com forum board.

Later I'll go back to reading 2 books I am reading.

I'll also check out the Herald Tribune later, also.

That's certainly an extreme reaction, but I wonder if it was purely a response to reading the book? I'm guessing she had problems and was already in an unstable state in which pretty much any arbitrary thing can push you over the edge.

Reminds me of people blaming the Columbine killings on the fact that the boys listened to Marilyn Manson records...

Yeah your right... Spud in "Porno" by Evrine Welsh, becomes depressed after reading Crime and Punishment in the nick... and he definatley had problems being discribed as "The biggest junkie scruff Leith has ever produced"

Nearly, I've got about 2 chapters left. I've got the ebook on my flash drive. Its quite interesting, and not at all pretentious! It just made me realise that nearly everything was discovered or invented by the English. Jolly good show
