I'm teaching several Japanese adults privately (one on one). I've used the old standby, _New American Streamline_ for a long time. Any ideas for other books? They are 'false beginners' (they all study from junior high through high school in Japan, so they are familiar with quite a bit of vocab, grammar--they've just had very little actual conversation practice, poor modeling, etc.).
I know Headway and Interchange are currently popular, but they seem more geared to group classes. They also seem to rely quite a bit on the optional tapes, which is a bit of a hassle many times. BTW, I prefer American English.
Thnx,
DP

"...ever wonder why they kill the weak ones, baby?"
Get away from the textbooks. Teach them what they need to know. How to ask questions, how to answer them with a complex sentence. Most Textbooks are shite here. if they did work, more would speak English.
Identify their weaknesses first. show them a series of 20 common verbs. can they read and translate them. Possibly know. Teaching here is about finding the problem and finding a solution. Textbook teaching is what they've been through already and failed with.

There are few problems in life that cannot be solved with toast.
One of them, however, is opening a can of corned beef with that stupid key. This cannot easily be done at the best of times, and toast is of surprisingly little use in resolving the issue.

Along with the bookwork, how about doing this:
Take them out to a shopping centre, a park or to restaurants and get them to ask questions about the products or to tell you about what they like to buy / eat / do.
i think she may well be mounting an oxygen tnak nat, utilizing, to good effect, it's inherent phallickness...Originally Posted by natalie8

Let's Talk 1, 2 & 3 is okay for conversation, but you do need to localise quite a lot of it, and not all students can understand the CD.
