I'm off there next month with herself. Flying into Hanoi. Can't wait, can't wait!
I want to read a bit about the war before I go. I heard Chickenhawk was good.

The Quiet American - Graham Greene
We kept waiting
Still nothing changes
It's a shame
John Pilger has a book about Vietnam I think which is supposed to have some great photography in it, too.

Good calls so far, lads. Can I add - 'The Cat from Hue' John Lawrence?
"Take this, brother; may it serve you well."
A Bright Shining Lie: John Paul Vann and America in Vietnam
The best book I ever read about the war. My two older brothers served in-country but were smart enough and lucky enough to have desk jobs. This really is a great book.
I thought Ugly American was set in some Malaysia-like country... Definitely not a factual history of the American experience in the Vietnam War. Hanoi is nice to visit, and definitely a worthwhile experience to see the Hanoi Hilton and the Museum of the American War (or whatever it is they call it there). Have a look at John McCain's flight suit ...
The Cat from Hue is an awesome book. I forgot about that. If I could only pick one, that would be it. The author spent a looooong time in country.

Yes and my number one occupation is stealing women from their men
"When Heaven And Earth Changed Places" by Le Ly Hayslip. It's an harrowing account of a teenage girl's experiences during the war of near-starvation, imprisonment, torture, rape, and the deaths of her family members.
Counterfeit copies are widely available in Vietnam itself.
These boys were not very nice. An interesting (and sad) read.
The tunnels of Cu Chi and Chickenhawk. There is another one about My Lai but the name escapes me. I also read an interesting account of an Englishman who served in the war. It wasn't a great book, as it did seem too much like selling the story and spicing it up, but it was interesting to hear from an Englishman.
It's true. She puts up with me and thinks I'm great.I'm doing well keeping anyone from letting her know otherwise also.
A barrel of laughs apparently.
Good suggestions all. What about places to visit not too far from Hanoi? We'll be limited on time.
