I'm no newb to the forum but I am new to teaching in Thailand. What books do y'all recommend as must haves for someone new to Thailand and more importantly new to teaching in Thailand? What should a newb be walking out of the bookstore with.
Also recommendations for bookstores and locations might be helpful.

We must take our actions to their logical conclusion...if the conclusion of any action means the end of the species...then that action must be viewed as antithetical to nature...and anyone performing that action must be considered insane...
If you're teaching kids "Teaching English to Children in Asia" by David Paul is pretty good.

Head over to the Chulalongkorn University bookshop, it's up near Siam Square end of the road next to the Faculty of Pharmacy.

Probably best to list just general books that are helpful to the average teacher in Thailand. We should get a good list and then newbs can pop in and ask for specifics if the need arises.
I'm thinking along the lines of these topics...
Helpful Thai phrase books or books for learning Thai.
Books for brushing up on grammar.
Thai/English English/Thai dictionaries.
Books to help understand the peculiarities of teaching Asian/Thai students.
Books on Thai culture...etc
Thanks.

For learning Thai, [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thai-Beginners-Benjawan-Poomsan-Becker/dp/1887521003"]Thai for Beginners, then Intermediate Learners by Benjawan Poomsan Becker.[/ame] Available in just about every bookshop I've been to in Thailand.
For culture, [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Culture-Shock-Thailand-Survival-Etiquette/dp/1558680586"]Culture Shock Thailand[/ame] is very informative.

Thanks Naboo.
There's a chapter on Thai speakers (and exactly why they have the problems they do) in this book:
[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Learner-English-Interference-Cambridge-Handbooks/dp/0521779391]Amazon.com: Learner English: A Teacher's Guide to Interference and other Problems (Cambridge Handbooks for Language Teachers): Michael Swan, Bernard Smith: Books[/ame]
I photocopied it from the library at the place where I did my tefl. Worth borrowing and doing the same - though would be an excellent book to have on your shelf too, particularly if you were planning on teaching in various countries.
The guy who wrote the chapter on Thai speakers (David smyth) also writes learn Thai language books/courses.
best of luck

"Discipline and Punish" by Foucault "The Progressive Classroom" by John Dewey (or anything by him) "Positive Classroom Discipline" by Fredric Jones "Discipline through Democratic Teaching" by Rudolf Dreikur "Instructional Management and Democratic Teaching" by Jacob Kounin "Discipline as Self Control" by Thomas Gordon "Noncoersive Discipline" by William Glasser "Discipline with Dignity" by Richard Curwin and Allen Mendler ** The above books are an excellent introduction to teaching philosophy and methodology** "Assertive Discipline" by Leo and Marlene Canter "Transactional Analysis" by Eric Berne and Thomas Harris **The above books are for those who like a more Draconian approach to teaching** I would also recommend Harry Wong's "The First Days of Teaching"
