Nothing like waiting until the last minute. I have some activities planned for my Tourism English class that can keep the students working on meaningful stuff for awhile. I really think that improving their overall English is the best prep for this field. Last year I didn't get a book but this year's students are not as advanced as last years, so I thought I'd give them more info directly related to this area of study.
I'm looking for a bookstore in Bangkok or near there that has a variety of books that I can look through. I don't want to buy online as I never know what I'm actually getting until I get it.
Thanks for the help.
Also, any other ideas for lessons or activities would be helpful. Two of the things I have planned so far is to have them each conduct a tour, as tour guide. This will help in their presentation skills and in the ability to answer questions. I will also get them working on a travel brochure. I'm going to have them help develop the idea for this one, so I'm keeping it less defined.

Tourism lesson plans for ESL Teachers: eslflow webguide
I like the booking into the hotel routine with one being the receptionist and one being the guest.
Make sure that they say please and thankyou.
The problem with the standard tourism books is that focus on locations outside of Thailand. It is better to focus on local industries and sites. It is useful to take them out in the field often. Show them local places and have them explain history and other stuff to you, as if they were a tour guide. Sometimes Thai stufents don't even know how to use maps of their own city of how to explain something to a foreigner.
I think it stands for Books to Stationary. They have a bunch of 'em here in HKT so I imagine they're in BKK as well. Probably in a mall somewhere.
What about all those free pocket books you can find in the lobby of hotels? Loads of contextual vocab practice there. I'm still not sure if you're looking for tour books for Thailand or EFL materials for tourism.
Have you divided the types of tours? Nat'l park (Khao Lak/Khao Yai), temple (White temple in Chiang Mai), holiday island (Chang or Phuket), BKK (boat tour from Saphan Thaksin to Saphan Rama iX), festivals (Rocket or Veggie), outside Bangers (Kanchantaburi/Auttaya)
Also, have you imparted on to them the importance of truth in advertizing?![]()
I'll do all that crew, on the first day of class next week.
And Ken, yes I hope to get them out in the field as tour guides. The good thing is the class is made up of only 12 students. I want them proficient in giving directions, a pet peeve of mine living in Thailand. I love to tell my students the either/or directional joke...they get tired of it quickly but get the point after awhile: Foreigner To Thai: Is McDonald's to the left or right? Thai To Foreigner: Yes.
Thanks for the link, JB...
