    Kho Samui here I come...

    Hi

I'll be coming to Thailand mid October to do a 6 week TEFL course on Samui. I've been planning moving to Thailand for a long time but due to other matters that were beyond my control I have only now been able to put my plan into action. I'm so excited

Anyone on this forum live/work in Samui? Any advice?

Well good luck to you. I am going back to Phuket in September to teach. You'll love Samui. Great beaches. Great diving.

Samui is a shithole. The whole place is going downhill due to unregulated development, hordes of generally young foreign tourists and an ever growing expat community. Add in a poor infrastructure, traffic jams, corruption and violence and you've a great place not to live in.

If you've only visited before or if this is your first time, you'll be all excited and will be taking everything in wide eyed in amazement. However once the novelty wears thin and you can see through the transparency of it all, things will certainly appear in a different perspective. Don't get me wrong, there are some fairly nice spots, semi decent beaches and a bit of nightlife but I personally think Samui is past it's best. Just my personal thoughts.

Each to their own though and I hope you have a good time there if I haven't put you off too much.

Yeah I hate Samui. It's a slum and Chaweng is crap. And it pissed it down and flooded when I was there last November. Lamai is shit too. You'd be better off going to Blackpool...

If you have never been its still quite beautiful. But if you have seen it before you will be shocked at unchecked development. I lived on Samui for 2 years, and went back after about 13 years. It was unrecogizable as the place I had lived.

November is always one of the wettest months on Samui, thats why its low season. January is great with monsoon generated waves for body surfing.

I've been to Samui a few times and I quite like it. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want to live there. I'll be moving on after I finish the TEFL cert. The course is 6 weeks long from Mon-Thurs so there will be plenty of time to relax and make a vacation of it as well...

I'll be living in the Lamai area as I prefer a bit of peace and quiet. If I want to go to town it's not too far away. Samui has everything I like albeit a little more expensive than other tourist areas in Thailand.

Yeah, six weeks on kho Ho might do you well. If you drink don't drive. If you drive don't drink.

Samui is not been ruined by the Thais although they are not helping the situation!!!

Up until 2002 Lamai was a sweet place to stay but a new hoard of wannabe English Gangsters have ruined it over the last few years!!!

I used to live there also, i boxed out of a gym in Lamai for 3 years!!!

I hope to never set foot on that island again, what a shame because it is beautiful!!!

Feel the same way ^^. I moved here to live and work on Samui, it was great for 22 months but then I moved on. Went back last summer as I said. Sadly that will probably be my last time.

I've been all over Latin America and there are sure nuff plenty of tourist traps on the Gringo trail. But you, as a traveler, are better off there than here. Most of Thailand's "Amazing Get Aways" are but a short distance from my station here in The South, seen them 'all'. Tourist-oriented locals often and easily fall into a general group we all know so well. Latin Americans are Christians, they might be grabby at times but they know they shouldn't be, they might even feel a sensation that would be foreign to a Thai: guilt. I think all of tourist Thailand sucks.

If you like to get killed or raped Samui is the place to go! Don't like it one bit. If you want beautiful scenery and islands and so, go to Trang.
What's love got to do with it...........
