I am planning on moving to Thailand to teach and will only have a tourist visa. to obtain this visa is it necessary to show a round-trip plane ticket or should i just buy a one way ticket so i can leave on my own time frame? would i have a hard time entering the country with a one way ticket? any suggestions would be a great help.
You shouldn't need to show a ticket but some places ask you to.
On a proper 60 day tourist Visa you should be okay with a one way ticket.

I got a 1 way ticket, the consulate here in the uk stamps your visa within 24 hours. Fast or what
as ive posted many times before. done the trip from teh US to bangkok many times on a one way, never had a problem. even without a visa.
Yeah until there is a problem....best to be safe especially with all the shit surrounding flights nowadays.

Don't bother getting a one-way ticket. Immigration officials never enforce that old piece of legislation (most probably haven't heard of it).
By the way, if anyone tries to give you a hard time, just tell them that you're on an Indochina trip, going overland from Thailand to Cambodia and Vietnam, and so on, eventually flying home from <doesn't matter where>. That's what lots of people actually do.
^ Mate as has been said it's not Immigration this end it's the carrier...they can and do refuse people boarding if they don't have a return ticket or the correct Visa (or an outward bound ticket).
