    Bad Schools

OK I just got information that the school I applied for and got accepted to was not a GOOD one.

I did not sign a contract and did not get a visa from them, so how do I gently decline the offer after it was given to me....mind you they have all my personal documents..scanned by computer..this includes degree, passport, etc...

I dont want to teach at a school that has a bad reputation!

    Any advice would be appreciated!!

Thanks, but no thanks! (I know that's not that helpful, but essentially that's it, isn't it?)

Dallia, what's your backstory? Are you right out of college?

Why not come to Thailand and see what things are like. This long-distance job search thing

really makes no sense because IT'S a DIFFERENT WORLD here.

    Re: Bad Schools

i did that once with a Korean school, the head of school ( a rich single female ) went mental, she rang all my references and previous work places trying to track me down and complaign - she threatened to sue me etc etc.

eventaully she got it into her thick head that since she'd lied about a few things abt the school I wanted nothing to do with her contract and she let it die a quiet death.

i'd be completely honest and tell the school exactly what u heard and why u dont want to go there now. (maybe they might get it into their thick heads that how they treat teachers etc does matter.....)

*nah, they'll just think badly of farangs again wont they?*

    Provide an excuse.

I have to return to my homecountry as my grandfather just died.

I have decided to take a job in China/Japan/Korea and will be leaving the country.

Do not tell them the truth, they don't expect you to anyway.

We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.

They told you a pack of lies. Agree with Umbuku, let them down gently. Grandmother's passed away. They're used to coming out with a load of crap. don't worry but sound advice is to get over here and check things out for yourself. Only a handful of schools here really value and appreciate their Ferrangs. Pick your job carefully.

    Re: Bad Schools

I actually lean towards Kingwilly's response.

"Excuse me, but I'm having second thoughts about accepting your offer. I have heard X about your school (I don't know what the situation is, but why sugar coat it) and was hoping you could tell me more about that situation."

Many times, the 'bad' things we hear about schools are from disgruntled employees. It may be that they weren't professional, got canned and decided to slag off the school. I remember, when in Korea, we sacked a teacher for walking into another teacher's classroom and very loudly proceeding to tell her about the size of his penis. This was in front of a full class of 12 and 13-year olds. It wasn't an isolated problem with him, but it was the last straw. He got canned and spent the next couple of years slagging off the school on every website he could find.

Agree, you can go either way on this. but sadly there are a few little vindictive schools here who might choose to make the OP's life miserable. They've got all her personal info and who knows if they have some immigration contacts. Yes shit schools need to be challenged but maybe better to err of the side of caution. difficult call

    Re: Bad Schools

Go on over the 'the other site', name the school, and ask for more information there. The responses you get should be taken with a healthy portion of salt, but you should be able to sift through the information easily enough.
    ...you get what you need.

Good advice. Tell them you heard of some other teachers who werent happy with the school and that you decided not to take the job for that reason. That way you are polite but you also let them know that teachers talk to each other. Helps everyone.
