Tips for first time in Thailand

Hey all. Quick introduction: I'm a recent biology graduate from California looking to spend a year teaching and getting involved in some volunteer opportunites.

I've got a ticket to Thailand for October 29th, although I'm going to be in Cambodia all of October before I move.

Can you guys provide some much needed tips for moving? Maybe things you wish you had have done when you first arrived. Stuff you forgot to bring. Stuff you wish you didn't do. These sorts of things.

I wanted to move to Chiang Mai but I'm afraid I might not be able to find a job, so I might just move into the Bangkok area. Where is an area you guys would suggest for a first start? Somewhere near some schools and in a decent area.

    Much appreciated, ajarns.

    1) Bar girls dont really like you much....
    2) Drugs will get you in a lot of trouble if caught.
    3) Barter on everything.
    4) Dont look like a backpacker
    5) See as much as you can. Trains are cheap and so is pretty much everything else.
    6) Dont talk politics, if your from the US people will automatically assume the worst and be assholes to you for the most part no matter what your views are.

Thanks so far guys. Not really interested in getting involved with bar girls or drugs (got a good head on my shoulders) but thanks for the heads up anyways.

What about clothes? I know appropriate dress for a teacher is slacks, shirt, and tie, but what about wandering about? Is it too hot for jeans? Will I ever need warm clothes?

    What else?

    Tie, what's that?

No, you won't need warm clothes.

    Jeans are okay. T-shirts too.

(I've said this before but) Bring a good pair (or two) of the kinda' dressy shoes you'll want to wear in the classroom; the shoes are better and cheaper in LA.

Don't forget all the orginal paperwork you'll need...(see other posts).

And cash, ATM cards, credit cards, travelors checks; don't forget those. Even with a "good head", money comes in handy.

That's great! But if you're planning on volunteer teaching just make sure you're doing it for kids whose families really can't afford a foreigner salary. Many of us make our living teaching kids whose parents can afford to pay our salaries. I.E. Don't drive down our wages.

Hehe. Fear not "ohyouknow", I plan on making a living the same way as you do, and volunteering elsewhere.

Hi californiasurf and welcome. You won't find too many surfing waves in Thailand, but we do get some good waves in the rainy season. as a couple of people have mentioned, bring some basic work clothes and shoes. If you have a favourite brand of underwear, stock up on them.

It's very hot and humid in Thailand for most of the year and it takes a good year to adjust to it. If you're here after October, you'll have missed the rainy season and we'll be into the "winter". It's less humid and sometimes the nights are cool.

Yuo can get just about anything that you would at home in Thailand, but I would recommend a couple of things. If you take supplements, buy them there before you come. The pickins are slim here and the prices are overinflated.

If you have a favourite line of hairstyling products, bring a good supply of those too. For some strange reason, they're limited here too.

I've actually got a surfboard in my office right now.

One of our lot recently entered a competition in Phuket...if you'd like me to put you in touch with him for the downlow....let me know. He said they're not wicked, but good enough!!!

    Incorrect.

Barter on most things (anything with out a price tag) stuff on the street etc.

Don't barter in shopping centres with clearly marked price tags.

surfing in thailand sucks and blows simultaneously, no mean feat. why bother when Indo is but a 3 hour flight away?
