We all have our standards and I am not prepared to give second rate teaching just because a very prominant family want to become multi, multi millionaires. I was lucky I had a great education in England, which has stood me in good sted over the past fifty years, why should I deprive the children of today the same benefit when I am capable of giving it to them. The trouble with the world today is everyone is looking out for themselves and do as little as possible for the maximum return. The days of a fair days work for a fair days pay seem to be long gone, its a case of 'what's the maximum I can get for doing as little as possible'. Sorry, but not my style and I'm proud of the scruples I have, it's the way I was brought up by my parents and relatives.

I've found it's actually gotten a lot better for older teachers here (if they don't act too old)....have you tried any businesses BC mate? You'd be surprised how many will take on a teacher direct and they often appreciate those with more experience etc. Get the Yellow Pages and get phoning....or knock on doors of companies near to you!!!

I admire your stance on this but the "looking out for yourself" way of thinking is difficult to escape. Since everyone else is only out for themselves and trying to screw you over along the way, the only way to get by is to look out for yourself since you cant rely on fair play anymore. Im not defending this viewpoint by the way I just dont see an alternative.

yes... that's great... my point was that, going by many posts on this board by people who teach thai children, most teachers here accept money for doing almost nothing to educate the children they work with... this is of course because 1)the education system sucks, 2)thai teachers and administrators all suck, 3) thai students suck, and 4) the thai elites don't want "somchai" to learn up on no english no how because then he'd be like a farang... which would mean "likely to take a low-paying job to go through the motions of doing something but not doing it really"... and then blaming the system... i mean, who can blame the elite?...

anyway... good luck finding a job...and fwiw, i share your scruples to a great extent... but i do find food goes a long way toward palliating my guilt about having to work in some dodgy situations...

I am considering taking ESL certification, but I have done much reading today and am beginning to have doubts about the likelihood that I'll be able to find work afterwards. For the record, I'm in my twenties and do not have a college degree.

I've forked out for work certification courses in the past (namely, a medical billing course in America), and was assured by instructors about the strength of the job market. After passing the course, I found that I was competing in a market where most applicants had 15+ years experience on average, and many had college. After a year of sending off résumés without any luck (usually without a response; I was asked to interview only once), I concluded that I had been scammed by my trade school.

So far, the only detailed responses I've had about the job market have been from people employed by certification schools, and for obvious reasons I don't trust a word they say. Blunt opinions please: am I wasting my time?
Yes the medical billing field is an absolute waste of time. Get your bachelors degree and a tefl cert and you will will be well on your way to the world of tefl.
