Hannah here; will be looking to get an apartment in Bangkok but have no idea where exactly would be a good spot... Any suggestions?
along ratchada for the mrt
around victory monument for bts and buses
upper sukhumvit for the bts
Where will you be working? That should be your first consideration, unless your place of employment is very close to the skytrain or underground then ^ wot Z-man said. Also, lower Lad Prao is a very convenient area to live.

As clsoe as possible to where you will be working and to a convenient public transport like the MRT or BTS or failing those a major aterial bus route.
If you don't know where you will be working find temporary accomodation until you do.
We could all sit outside on banana lounges discussing the best way to rebuild a 4WD transmission and agree, through shared stories of conquests supporting our assertions, that there is no basis to the proposition that those least assured of their persuasions are the first to condemn others for theirs.
Try to get as near your work as you can. Hard to advise you when you dont know where you will be working. Its a very big city with incredible congestion. You need to be near an MRT or BTS line if you can.
