    Question about Visas- Tourist/Non-Imm

Ok- So I have been trying to find an answer to this, but I have been getting a lot of different answers.

My girlfriend and I are going to BKK August 4th 2009.
    Month 1- Travel
    Month 2- TEFL
    Month 3-Travel
Month 4- Start teaching at a school

So that means we are going to need up to 90 days until we get a work permit/visa from the school.

Should we get the free 60 day tourist and re-enter?

Can we get a non-imm visa?

We are Americans. How do we go about GETTING the FREE tourist visa if we went that route?

Do we send our application in WITHOUT the money and a letter inquiring about the free tourist visa? Can we get one ON ARRIVAL?

This is the final piece of the puzzle to get to Thailand next month. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks Guys!

I would suggest that you contact your local Thai Consulate for advice.

It'll be more like 90 days from when you start work.

A tourist visa will probably be ok. It can be extended at an immigration office here for another 30 days. If month 3 is travel in the surrounding countries, you can get another free tv then.

If you leave the county before your visa expires, and want to keep it to the date they stamped you in until, you'll need a re-entry permit. You get that at immigration. The airport no longer issues them.

For November hires, you normally need to be looking in October. Some schools may know about openings earlier, but many teachers leave without a lot of notice so the schools won't know they need to hire anyone.

    Good luck.

    Re: Question about Visas- Tourist/Non-Imm

I'm picking up my free 60 day tourist visa today.

You just fill out a form and give them a photo and copy of the picture page of your passport.

It's free and easy and upon extension it will give you 90 days, but only a single entry.

Otherwise, you can exit and get the 30 days visa free stay stamp if you fly, or for 15 days overland.

I'm gonna spend five weeks in Thailand, then ten days in Laos overland, get the 15 days stamp at Nong Khai, then ten days in Thailand.

Getting the 60 days tourist visa before flying to Thailand gives you some flexibility. Doing it this way won't cost me a baht in Thailand visas.

Don't bother about a non - imm until you get a job.

You are one grumpy ass dude, I swear.

Its like you troll the newb boards to pick on people who aren't as enlightened as you. It's pretty awesome if you ask me.

    Thanks for your help guys.

And to answer your question seriously Aging_One, the 3rd month will be spent trying to find where we want to settle down, once we figure that out (quickly) we will be looking for work.

But remember you'll have to leave the country again to get a non-imm visa. Your school may pay for it but most don't cover visa costs or costs involved travelling to obtain one. if you can, obtain 1 visa to cover all your needs before you depart your home country (most Thai consulates away from SE Asia take postal applications so you don't even need to travel to the consulate): a 1-year multiple-entry non-immigrant B visa does the trick. Contact your TEFL course because they should be able to sponsor this visa for you.

Thia is my biggest deciding factor of which course to choose! Their ability to do so gives them a lot of credibility IMO.

Getting a 30 day visa on arrival will not even allow you to take the 4 week course without doing a border hop and then you will only get another 15 days. I think even getting the now free 60 day tourist visa with a 30 day extension is cutting it close especially if you want to travel before or after the course.

The bottom line is you are going to have to pay for the non-imm B visa anyway, so best get it before you leave your home country. I just checked and cost $175 from the US.

Another thought is taking a TEFL certification on a tourist visa is illegal.
