There's a little place in Songkhla called the "Secret Garden" cafe.

    Close to downtown farangville.

    Behind the Chinese Consulate....

That building used to be an American Consulate.

Check it out. Back garden will transport you into a different reality.

    Food is good and cheap.

Lots of little waterfalls back there.

few Farang use the place, but still...very nice.

Have you done the Buzz Stop Rob.

(that will rack you up some serious expense....try the 1500 baht grain fed Texan beef steak)

    Lots of expats there.

    not many teachers though...too expensive.

But George will sometimes do a teachers special which will run you under 400 baht.

Best whiskey that money can get as well...but be prepared to spend money.

You're better off taking the van out of Hatyai at the clock tower to Songhkla...28 baht.

    *********************

    I'm keeping track here.....

Seems like about 50 percent of your money is going for booze?

    ---Update---

Did i read that you were sharing a room with three others?

Surely you jest on this matter..........

    (I can't imagine it...not when you're teaching...maybe on holidays...but not while teaching)

    Have you met Stretch?

    Hatyai regular.

the buzz stop is nice but like you said russel too expensive for teacher, at the end of srisuda road u have Mr Steak, not expensive, the service is not that great but i can recommend the chicken steak with bacon and cheese for 120 baht or something, good value for money. Russell where exactly is the "secret garden"?

That would be on Sadao Rd.

As the name suggests, it's kind of secret.

    Find the "Office"

    Proceed past the Royal Palace.

    Head towards beach.

First or second turn to left.

There is a sign out on the road.

    Down a half block.

    Worth checking out.

Nice place to take the girl friend.....

Mr. Steak........good price on steak, yes.

    But pork steaks?

    Pork is for chops.

    I couldn't recommend the place..

The Hot Bread Shoppe is another good one to check out. Excellent Sandwiches. 100 baht.

Auntie's Cafe is probably not in the top ten.

    .....and Rob...

I was also getting the impression that even though you were drinking through your money pretty fast, your amount of money left still seemed to be growing.

    Just askin', eh.

If you're heading to Laser Disc and spending 700b you might as well buy the litre bottle of Smirnoff vodka that comes with free ice and mixers...

Would recommend heading up to the bars by Prince of Songkhla Uni. Cheap, lively and you'll get some good conversation from the students. Also Zeed Pub in Songkhla is pretty cool, take your own bottle and pay corkage if you're trying to save pennies, it's not much at all.

And I know the guy who did the video about teaching in Hat Yai - he did absolutely love teaching and living and partying there, and still goes back occasionally from Nakhon. There was a big group of us who all enjoyed our positions - the farang circle is small compared to Bangkok but does seem to be growing and is fun. There's a lot of TEFLers that get recruited and started by a couple of agencies down there so there's always somebody up for doing something - you might come into contact with a few of your 'travel wankers' but on the whole most people are on the same page and look out for each other.

You'll be more than fine on 30k, there's not a huge amount of expensive shops/bars in HY, cost of living is pretty cheap. Most of your outgoings will be when you go away for weekends. Hope it goes well for you.

Just a quick line to let everyone know that I'm still keeping a note of every expense and the like, it's just too mad to post it all on here in a decent format. I'll be doing a big update with all of the days as soon as I can but things are mad - teaching summer school, had some great classes today and Russ, I've been lucky and gotten some writing money in so the drinking hasn't worn too big a hole in my budget and it's been knocked on the head now that I'm working. Talk to you all soon!

    --Update--

Russ, I've been drinking mostly at Bamboo, it's just down the road from the laser disc? The guy that runs it is pretty sound.

Hey all, long time no post. Into my new flat, start work tomororow, just blew a great deal of my money on spending my birthday in Krabi. Done typing up the majority of my notes on spending, expect to see detailed posts in the next couple of days to bring us up to date with only a little while left of the month charting the move.
