The apartment is my main priority for the moment, so will give it a month or so into the job and then see about the private lessons.

Weird thing though the school has taken my degree and transcripts and won't give them back until I leave, which I'm not happy about but what can I do. They say its to stop people doing a runner, but If I'm that desperate to go I can always get a copy from my uni so fail to see the point.

If you happen to find a nice place in a central location that rents for 1 month or less in CM and has a good pool, can you let me know?

They have no right to keep them. This is bad news, Jamm and unfortunately it says something about the bad management ethics of your employer.

And to be honest, I would demand them back immediately and move on.

Be cautious if you plan to stay there.

Seems like a nice school and they are paying me 60K

Not sure what to do now. I've signed the contract and I start on the 8th and I have to give them three months notice If I want to quit. Might ask for them back and tell them I will have to give notice if they aren't returned. Gives me three months to find a new job.

During the 10 years of EFL teaching in Thailand I've heard about escrows but never heard about employers keeping the employees' degree and transcript to prevent running.
