Speaking to Power with Love
My old co-volunteer, Duane Ediger of Dallas, just wrote this, and I think it's worthy of discussion. The 'Bees' to whom he refers are Las Abejas of Chiapas, Mexico, who sufferred the massacre of Acteal and, as Christian pacifists and active peacemakers, regularly visit all their enemies in love:
"Jesus, the Bees in Chiapas, Mandela, nonviolence movements in Palestine, Philippines, the U.S. South, etc., show that what enemy-loving really does is unmask, make ineffectual and overwhelm domination practices that, by the faith exercised in the nonviolent commitment, become weak on their face. This is why worldy powers commonly attempt to discredit their more powerful, nonviolent justice-seeking opponents by associating them with indispensable "enemies," with whom they are joined in a warm embrace of violence. -Duane Ediger"
You might substitute Archbishop Tutu for Mandela's name.
