Russia currently exports more oil than Saudi Arabia - true. Europe freaked out when they cut it for a week last year. Russia does matter.

There's a lot of bad press about Putin but I think it comes from fear. If I was Russian, I would want him at the helm right now.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out. I'm personally all for people being able to choose their own government/borders.

It's a great excuse for some hightened tension internationally though!

PARTS of Europe freaked not Europe, Russia has got more Oil than any other country as far as I know but most of the EU power houses don't need it. The UK certainly does not need it as we have more than enough oil in the North Sea if push comes to shove, we export a lot more than we use.

Russia are trying to be big bad men which they just are not anymore, they need to back down and stop doing stupid things and mouthing off like morons.

As far as a peak oil topic goes, the UK's Collin Campbell is a great resource regarding how screwed the UK's energy future is. He was a former geologist for Shell and Total.

Not to unsettle anyone, but Kosovo, as a cultural extension of Albania, will be the second Muslim-dominated country in Europe (assuming Bosnia is too much of an awkward mix to be categorized as anything but hopeless).

It looks like the Caliphate, having lost its foothold in Spain centuries ago, is looking to re-establish itself elsewhere in Europe. I imagine the Iranians and the Saudis will start their mosque-building competition soon.

You said yourself that Russia does export more oil than Saudi currently. To not think that matters and that Russia is a small player is, well, wrong.
Energy/Oil = power & influence.

The UK's position might be currently that they are fine as far as current needs. I think they'll have huge problems in the near future. Aside from that though, I'm not discussing what Russia's influece over UK is. I'm talking about them as a world player. They are important.

Good point Tomcat regarding the Caliphate. Europe is going to be a major flash point.

Yes a world player with oil certainly they have more oil than any other country as I said, they can be dangerous with their oil reserves I just hope that they keep selling it even at inflated prices, nobody want a war over the black stuff.

Lets just hope that we can all get a renewable source of energy, but it does seem that the EU and Russia are constantly bitching at each other russia really needs to back down over things. All they currently have is oil and gas and as I said the power houses in the EU don't need to worry about Russia being shitty, it's only the poorer places which makes me sad.
If the decide to be shitty then it will only hurt the poor, it won't hurt the people that Russia REALLY wants to hurt.

I didn't mean to get all uppity re Russia. I did spend some time there and in Ukraine/Crimea. A lot of backward things there & major problems, but Russia has a lot going for it resourse wise and I'll throw a few comments their way now and again. It's not a country to be discounted.

I'm throwing this off topic but there are no suitable alternatives to fossil fuels. Solar, Wind, Nuclear, Bio-Fuels are all great but are a drop in the bucket. We're heading for a world peak in oil production and Washington/London/Moscow/etc. knows it. I just think it's interesting to see what gets countries stirred up these days so they get a chance to exert some "influence".

I agree mate but we're sucking them all up and it will lead to I want what you have and I will take it! Which is what nobody wants, we should be spendin more money on something simple like solar energy. If that sort of research got half of what we are currently spending on our militaries it would be more than viable
