vBookie Event: US Presidential Election (Politics)
CLEVELAND (AP) - In the state that may again determine the presidency, voters started casting ballots Tuesday as Barack Obama struggles to thwart a John McCain victory in Ohio four years after it tipped the election to President Bush.
Both candidates visit often while spending millions of dollars flooding TV and radio with advertisements, mailboxes with literature and even voicemail with automated phone calls to get supporters to the polls, particularly during the one-week window in which people can register and vote in one swoop.
Early participation appeared light; officials in the state's largest counties that are home to Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo and Dayton each reported several hundred ballots cast by afternoon. Many of those who voted cited convenience.
"I wanted to avoid the traffic and the people," said Charlene Glass, 49, of Cleveland Heights. A first-time voter, she backed Obama and expressed her enthusiasm for a black candidate. In Dayton, Terri Bell, 49, chose McCain because of his experience and his military service. "I have a lot on my plate. I wanted to do this early," she said.

Most recent state polls show a dead heat; others give McCain an edge. National surveys show Obama slightly ahead if not more. The disparity underscores the difficulty Obama is having in closing the deal in this pivotal state. He's a first-term senator from Chicago with a liberal voting record and would be the country's first black president.
In all, 270 electoral votes are needed for victory. Ohio is crucial to McCain's electoral strategy. Bush narrowly won the state, and a loss for McCain here would be very difficult to make up with victories elsewhere given that the political landscape favors Democrats and several other key states are tilting toward Obama.

I was waiting to bet on this until after the conventions. The tanking of the economy (with the Dow falling below 11,000) was the end for the Republicans, because there was a Republican president when the economy took a dump. There will be no economic recovery prior to the November 4 election. The economy is the #1 issue, and McCain admitted that his forte is international relations, not the economy. Polling puts Obama substantially out in front on the economic issues.
National polls show Obama now enjoys a 7% edge in probable voters. Obama has enough popular vote to overcome the electoral college bias in favor of rural states. He is starting to poll very well in battleground states Ohio (which started early elections yesterday), Pennsylvania and Florida.
Palin was a flash in the pan, and did not bring sustained energy to McCain's campaign. McCain is looking and sounding old and tired. This campaign took quite a toll on the candidates, but it was obvious in the speeches regarding the bailout plan, that Obama's youth and energy gave him more lasting power in a tough battle.

What about the House? They canned the bill. How can the Senate vote on it?

exactly! bills are to originate in the House. So since it was voted down in the House Monday there should have been a new bill originated in the House, voted on, then sent to the Senate.
They're now doing it anyway they want to I guess.

I was just discussing the same thing with a British associate. What the hell is going on? The Senate passes a revised bill and sends it to the house?

WASHINGTON — Recently trailing or tied, Democrat Barack Obama now leads John McCain in a trio of the most critical, vote-rich states five weeks before the election, according to presidential poll results released Wednesday.
The Democrat's support jumped to 50 percent or above in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania in Quinnipiac University surveys taken during the weekend _ after the opening presedential debate and during Monday's dramatic stock market plunge as the House rejected a $700 billion financial bailout plan.
Combined, these states offer 68 of the 270 electoral votes needed for victory on Election Day, Nov. 4.
Pollsters attributed Obama's improved standing to the public's general approval of his debate performance, antipathy toward GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin and heightened confidence in the Illinois senator's ability to handle the economic crisis.
The new surveys show Obama leading McCain in Florida 51 percent to 43 percent, in Ohio 50 percent to 42 percent and in Pennsylvania 54 percent to 39 percent.
