There was some form of 'gentlemen's agreement' (Gag..gag..spit..spit) between him and Blair that Blair would one day step aside for him to take the premiership.

There would have been an automatic party election but the government was, by that time, so unpopular that the consensus was that nobody should stand against him - thus he was crowned 'leader' without an election.

And to be fair Brown has always been a formidable politician and a highly intelligent man. He's presided over what has thus far been a mediocre term in office but a great deal of that is down to his lack of underhandedness, a lack of nous for spin and charm as well as being undermined from the get-go by the Blairites. Miliband wants his job big time. He may get it yet.

I've always perceived the position of PM in the UK as a far more substantive and influential position in terms of policy than that of the US presidency regardless of who's in charge. Campaign donations hold far too much sway over newly elected Presidents. That's not to say that British politics isn't just a little rotten itself in that manner just not as fundamentally fucked as the US system. The apathy on show here for instance from so many American members with regards to the difference in prospective governance between the two Presidential candidates is really rather depressing for us that hope for some real change in your foreign policy.

Oh he uses it I'm sure, it's just that he doesn't have Blair and his entourage's finesse for it. Blair really was the consummate modern politician. I don't particularly like him nor what he did to the Labour Party but I have to give him credit. Having said that though, Brown played no small part in Labour's resurgence as a political force as well as their three consecutive election wins.
