[I]Makers of the death vans say the vehicles and injections are a civilized alternative to the firing squad, ending the life of the condemned more quickly, clinically and safely. The switch from gunshots to injections is a sign that China "promotes human rights now,"says Kang Zhongwen, who designed the Jinguan Automobile death van in which "Devil" Zhang took his final ride.
Injections leave the whole body intact and require participation of doctors. Organs can "be extracted in a speedier and more effective way than if the prisoner is shot," says Mark Allison, East Asia researcher at Amnesty International in Hong Kong. "We have gathered strong evidence suggesting the involvement of (Chinese) police, courts and hospitals in the organ trade."
    Oh, now it makes sense.

Smog and protests: cue the Games

CHINESE authorities faced multiple security breaches yesterday as Tibet, religious freedom and other activists used the Olympic stage to highlight their opposition to Chinese Government policies.
In a dramatic day of protests, four foreign tourists were arrested near the Olympic stadium after shimmying up 40-metre light poles to unfurl giant "Free Tibet" banners.
Three American pro-life activists breached the tight security around Tiananmen Square to protest against China's one-child policy and forced abortions.
Other actions by a religious freedom group and anti-fur activists took place at different venues across the city as the Olympic flame arrived back in Beijing for its final run towards the opening ceremony tomorrow.
As Beijingers awoke to a third day of polluted skies, the official Xinhua news agency reported that two American and two British tourists who unfurled Tibetan flags and two banners reading "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet" and "Tibet will be free" were arrested within 12 minutes of the illegal activity soon after 5.30am.
New York-based Students for a Free Tibet, which released photographs of the protest, said the banners were up for about an hour before fire trucks arrived to remove them.
Protester Iain Thom, 24, from Edinburgh, told American ABC News by mobile phone as he climbed down a light pole that he expected to be arrested. "But I believe it's not anywhere near the risk or the fear that Tibetans are living under the occupation of the Chinese Government," he said.
The foreign protesters are likely to be deported, but police are legally able to hold them without notifying their respective embassies for 72 hours.
Their whereabouts and condition were still uncertain last night. A spokesman for the British embassy said it had not been notified by the authorities that two of its citizens were being held and was making inquires.
Hours after the protesters were arrested, an attempt to screen a pro-Tibet film, Leaving Fear Behind, to invited foreign media at a city hotel was disrupted after hotel managers told the organisers they were pressured by police to stop the event.
Only about six of the 40 invited journalists managed to get into the room and see the start of the documentary before everyone was evicted.
The protests came as Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said he would raise concerns about human rights abuses in China this weekend. He will travel to Beijing today for the opening ceremony tomorrow and is scheduled to meet the Chinese leadership.

"As I've said before with our friends in Beijing, we will always raise our human rights concerns with them. I've done that in the past, I've done it privately, I've done it publicly and I'll be doing that again," he said.
Also yesterday, rooms at two Beijing hotels were defaced by a Western religious freedom activist who filmed himself painting anti-Olympic slogans on the walls, including "One world, our nightmare". The first clip, at the Novotel Peace Hotel near Tiananmen Square, was available on YouTube in China.
US President George Bush, in South Korea on his way to attend the Games, said China's leaders "ought to welcome people being able to express their minds, and to the extent that people aren't able to do that and people aren't able to worship freely, (it) is a mistake".
Outside the Olympic village, US swimming gold medallist Amanda Beard launched the latest anti-fur campaign by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. Beard appears naked in new posters with the tagline "Be comfortable in your own skin. Don't wear fur".
Excited crowds yelling "Go Olympics, Go China!" welcomed the Olympic torch yesterday morning on its way to the Bird's Nest stadium for the opening ceremony.
It was revealed that a third of the 15,000 performers in the ceremony will be from the military, and thousands more troops will mingle in the stands as part of the crowd. With

    Re: F*ck China

I wonder how many of the "fuck china" posters actually try to do something about the growing power of the Chinese Empire? Do you refuse to buy products made in China, for example? Or is it just too difficult and apparently futile to run a personal boycott campaign when you can rave on on a web-board with the tap of a key?

The occupation and suppression of Tibet seems to be the focus of anti-Chinese rhetoric in most cases dealing with Chinese imperialism, which is typical in so many ways. Tibet is an exotic, hard-to-reach tourist destination and it has the world's most famous poster boy, the former god-king of a theocratic kingdom where peasants were required to fling themselves to the ground whenever the Dalai or other Lamas happened by. Western "liberals" just love to love these sorts of exotic destinations and somehow fail to see that the Maoist incursion, no matter how dreadful in some ways, was indeed a liberation for those groveling peasants, whether they acknowledge it or not.

Taiwan, on the other hand, is just a country, with an industrialized economy and a functioning democratic system. It is hardly on the tourist map and definitely not much talked about when "liberals" gather to bash away at the awfulness of the CCP. It just so happens, though, that Taiwan is where the rubber hits the road in any real opposition to Chinese imperialism. The Taiwan Strait is one of the most militarized areas in the world, with thousands of Red Army missiles aimed at boring, industrialized, democratic Taiwan. During the last crisis there, about 12 years ago, the good old US of A sent the USS Nimitz on a quiet cruise through the strait to let the PRC know that they were willing to stand behind the Taiwanese. It was the first time an American warship had been there in 20 years. I wonder how many of those who rail on about China and Tibet would be willing to support a war fought in defense of Taiwan? Such a war would make Iraq look like a cakewalk and would undoubtedly involve a rapid re-militarization of Japan. A lot of people would die and economies would be shattered. Walmart and Lenovo would suffer. The cost of PCs and laptops and T-shirts would go up.

So, what do you say guys? Put your money where your mouth is and support Taiwan, or keep putting money into the pockets of the CCP just about every time you shop for anything? Would you support the American military defense of Taiwan, knowing just how much "blood and treasure" it would cost? Or would the tune just change to "fuck Bush and Cheney" or the names of whatever American "neo-cons" happened to be there to take responsibility for defending the democratic rights of the Taiwanese, who also just happen to be a lot of "chinks" with a culture very different from ours?

    Just asking.

    Re: F*ck China

I am in China and haven't had problems googling "pollution" I also go to the guardian and nytimes on the daily with little interference.

I agree with most of the negative comments regarding China. I think my main complaint is with the government, but because of the government, the people here are dreadfully boring. So, I dislike and hate most of what is...China.
