All true IMO. Go there and see their military in action, they make Thais look like Air Borne Rangers Special Force trained, heartless killers. Thank you China for paper, kites, shadow puppets, battered shrimp, and fire crackers! Now go fuck off and die!

Chinese defector beats Olympic surveillance

With the Beijing Olympics less than two weeks away Chinese authorities are watching closely for any sign of protests.

Police are keeping close tabs on dissidents - thousands of whom have reportedly been forcibly removed from the capital, while restrictions have been tightened on the use of internet chat sites.

But a Chinese defector in Sydney has found a simple way to beat police surveillance and talk to like minded Chinese at home.

CHEN YONGLIN: We came here to show a different voice of the Chinese people.

ERIC CAMPBELL: In his neat, blue business suit, 30-year-old Chen Yonglin still looks like a Chinese diplomat.

But to some Chinese in Australia, he's a traitor.

In April, nationalistic students shouted him down as he tried to protest at the Olympic torch rally in Canberra.

CHEN YONGLIN: Millions of Chinese people are suffering in China.

ERIC CAMPBELL: Chen Yonglin once worked at the Chinese consulate in Sydney, monitoring local Chinese dissidents.

Three years ago he defected and joined the other side, not just organising anti-communists in Australia, but advising dissidents in mainland China.

CHEN YONGLIN: They are the seeds of freedom. They spread the seeds you know, but very quickly.

ERIC CAMPBELL: Every weekend, from his suburban Sydney home, Mr Chen organises conference calls with activists across China.

Instead of using telephones, which can be easily traced, he hosts forums on the internet, using a free voice protocol called Skype.

It allows hundreds to join in under false names.

While authorities can eavesdrop, it's almost impossible to find the callers.

CHEN YONGLIN: Now over you know 2,000 activists now appear in China. That means the message is spreading very quickly and the people change their mind because of our effort.

ERIC CAMPBELL: It's a first step in bringing disaffected Chinese together.

Human rights activists and lawyers share advice with underground churches, angry workers and so-called petitioners. Ordinary Chinese from the provinces who come to Beijing to complain about corrupt party officials.

They're the very groups authorities are trying to silence in the lead up to the Olympics.

Tens of thousands of petitioners have already been expelled from the capital in fear they might protest in front of 25,000 foreign journalists now arriving to cover the games.

CHEN YONGLIN: People want to use this opportunity to draw attention on the human rights issue, serious human rights issue in China.

ERIC CAMPBELL: And the government is worried about this?

CHEN YONGLIN: Definitely.

recently scott mclelan (sp?) bush's old press secretary admitted that the white house fed fox news lines. we always kinda knew that. but when you hear it from the horse's mouth, it stings.

but standing behind the cage and feeding the monkeys, like the white house (of yesteryear too) is a lot different than the government literally running the flow of information. is there even free thought there?

and i dont mean creative ideas and smart people arent there. but can anyone say that people in china are free to think and associate as they please? afraid to have foreigners in her place? youve got to be kidding me!!!! thats kind of a staple of human dignity for fucks sake. "please enter, we welcome you and are pleased to have you enter our home and be our friend" ...fucking worldwide gesture most of us had here in thailand. i cant count the number of times ive been invited in for food or drink. even by strangers.

and if theres anyone whos got chinese grandmas or moms, or whatever chinese in your blood- i dont mean to offend you. but yo- your government sucks. your country is like a tightly packed toyota yaris, chalk full of engineers, brilliant scientists, literary geniuses, and a fucking clown circus government behind the wheel- the likes of dick cheney and his conservative cohorts could only dream of.

get a better driver and then your gem can shine. until then, your government is pathetic and efforts to be a player on the world stage are embarassing.

When Beijing was bidding for the Games in 2001, Olympic Organizing Committee Vice President Wang Wei, then secretary of the bid committee, said, "If you want to demonstrate, an application will be required, you'll be designated to a certain place and time, and you can do it, no problem"


"That law requires that requests [to protest] be made five days in advance and bars applications that harm the country's unity, sovereignty and integrity. Applications advocating separatism and applicants who cannot prove permanent or long-term residency are forbidden, apparently ruling out protests by pro-Tibet groups or evictees and homeless petitioners."
