the US is growing...

....in upsets.

If the rate of under-the-poverty-line wasn't enough:

According to the US Census Bureau, 35.9 million people live below the poverty line in America, including 12.9 million children.

Some Statistics on Poverty in America

-------------------------------------------------

Or divorce rates not high enough:

Here's a sampling of some of the most recently available statistics on marriage and divorce in the United States of America:
  • There were approximately 2,230,000 marriages in 2005 -- down from 2,279,000 the previous year, despite a total population increase of 2.9 million over the same period.
  • The divorce rate in 2005 (per 1,000 people) was 3.6 -- the lowest rate since 1970, and down from 4.2 in 2000 and from 4.7 in 1990. (The peak was at 5.3 in 1981, according to the Associated Press.)
  • The marriage rate in 2005 (per 1,000) was 7.5, down from 7.8 the previous year.
  • In 2004, the state with the highest reported divorce rate was Nevada, at 6.4 (per 1,000). Arkansas was a close second, with a divorce rate of 6.3, followed by Wyoming at 5.3. The District of Columbia had the lowest reported divorce rate, at 1.7, followed by Massachusetts at 2.2 and Pennsylvania at 2.5. (Figures were not complete for California, Georgia, Hawaii, Indiana, Louisiana, or Oklahoma.)

and crime?....well....crime....

The United States Crime Index Rates Per 100,000 Inhabitants went from 1,887.2 in 1960 to 5,897.8 in 1991. By 1991 the crime rate was 313% the 1960 crime rate. In 1996 your risk of being a victim of a crime in the United States was 5.079%, and of a violent crime 0.634%.

Back to school: Shaky economy hits kids

By LIBBY QUAID, AP Education Writer Mon Aug 18, 6:39 AM ET

WASHINGTON - Hard times and higher fuel prices will follow kids back to school this fall.
Children will walk farther to the bus stop, pay more for lunch, study from old textbooks and wear last year's clothes. Field trips? Forget about it.

This year, it could cost nearly twice as much to fuel the yellow buses that rumble to school each morning. If you think it's expensive to fill up a sport utility vehicle, try topping off a tank that is two or even three times as big.
At the same time, costs for air conditioning and heating, cafeteria food and classroom supplies are mounting, all because of the shaky economy. And parents have their own tanks to fill.

The extra costs present a tricky math problem: Where can schools subtract to keep costs under control?
___
In rural Minnesota, one district is skipping classes every Monday to save fuel. On the other days, classes will be about 10 minutes longer.

Don't worry, extranazi or one of his mates will be along in a minute to tell you that those figures are liberal lies, and that everything is in fact wonderful in the good old US under Georgie boy.

Don't bad economies often reflect marriage and divorce rates. Isn't the #1 cause of marriage and divorce about money? Happiness has a lot to do with it. Look at the Aztecs of old. They were so sad they stopped breeding.

If economy is bad it makes (economical) sense for 2 people to share the cost of living, instead going forward with expensive divorce and then being stuck paying rent/mortgage all by themselves.

  • The property crime rate decreased 2.4% from 2004 to 2005. From 1996 to 2005, the rate fell 22.9%.

Oh, I get it....you trust a website named the Disaster Center over the FBI statistics....why again? The Disaster Center has something to sell jimbo. Seriously, we all know you hate the US. You don't really need to pull things out of your ass to convince us you hate the nation. Off to being a Brit with ya!

Who is "we" ?? You have a mouse in your pocket?

No. Once again...YOU ARE WRONG. I do not hate the US. I "hate" no one and nothing.....why would I use up my own energy and I have it sapped from "hate?" Alas, another thread...

I am however upset and am not happy with what the US has become economically, politically and in many cases socially. Open your eyes and maybe then you won't have to be such a mute.

Re: the US is growing...

I recently visited the US and it seems people, as usual, are living on the edge. One hiccup and there can be lots of financial problems.

I know many people driving $30,000 cars and living in $300,000 houses who that $4 per gallon gas (only 1 liter per gallon) is causing them hardship.

Knuckleheads.

Re: the US is growing...

There were two interesting studies done in Australia and the UK which tracked suicide rates over 100 years of conservative and liberal government rule. During times when conservatives hold sway and conservative policies are enacted (no social safety net, "me" society, pull yourself up by your bootstraps or inherit), the suicide rate jumps dramatically.
