Just interested (or rather disinterested in this case) but any comments re. Christopher Hitchens' book "God is not Great"? I enjoyed it very much. Food for thought and all that...
Not sure what the OP was trying to achieve with a 2-option 'poll' where one of the categories is 'Yes! Muslims have every right to tell us where to put library books' !!
This story is hugely illustrative and important in a symbolic sense however; the whole point of a library is the revelation of reason and learning, and 'a democracy of content' is fundamental to that purpose. Add to this the whole (again symbolic) civic sacredness of the place, as regards the development of education and welfare in British society, and the answer should come very clearly: this is one place where their writ cannot be allowed to run.

I was in the car driving to Heathrow returning to BKK last week when this report was being thrashed around on LBC radio phone-in.
It appears that it was a misleading and sensationalist newspaper headline that has caused all the misunderstanding. The facts as I understood them were that a government setup quango feared that muslim groups 'would' take offence if the Koran was placed below other books in public libraries so has advised that they keep ALL religious books on the top shelf...
Just to make it clear - this story did the rounds of discussion boards in the UK about 7 -8 years ago.
No reliable source was ever produced to confirm there is any truth in it whatsoever.
It was generally concluded that the story was just concocted by some unnamed person with an agenda.
Another story that did the rounds at the time was about 'Hot Cross Buns', which are buns with a cross on the top eaten at Easter time in the UK - the cross being commemorative of the crucifix.
A widely circulated story, initially printed in the Daily Mail I think, had it that these buns had been banned from the menu of a school canteen in Liverpool because of their 'religious connotations', and because the parents of muslim children had complained about them.
This story gathered pace rapidly - partly fuelled by people with agendas posting on message boards.
It turned out that the story was a load of bollocks and no such thing had ever happened.
I just thought I'd mention this in case pan hunger also digs up this near decade old 'story' from some obscure source.![]()
