Writing a paper for a course related to media and politics, I summoned the courage to venture into the very heart of darkness: the Fox News website. I was immediately smacked in the face with this kickass, super-righteous photo pimping the lead story:
Seriously, that looks like an ad for the latest summer blockbuster or computer shoot 'em up game. How can anyone be stupid enough to take this seriously?

Looks like a Marine infantryman who just exited a CH-53, took up a hasty firing position, and is securing the landing zone with an M4 rifle, toting a ruck, and AT4. It also looks a lot like Helmand Province. Happens everyday, I assure you.
Interesting observations above. Amazing how folks just fill in the blanks so that the photo conforms to and projects their politics, agenda, or most memorable cinema experience. Tabula raza.

You honestly don't see how this photo has sensationalized war? Made it seem kind of glamorous and exciting? What's with the super-sized CAPITAL LETTERS?

I'm not familiary with Fox News so I'm in no position to support or otherwise but it's obvious that there are a number of Merkins on here who view this channel with something approaching paranoia.
It's standard practice with virtually ever media outlet to use library pictures as a backdrop for a story, with the picture reflecting the nature of that story.
An item on education - pic of teacher at a whiteboard. Story on agriculture - pic of a cow or sheep etc.
In this case it's about an US initiative in Afghanistan so they have a backdrop picture of a US solder or marine in dessert camouflage with a helicopter behind him.
That's a big deal?
Get a life, for chrissakes.
Touched a nerve, did I? My point is that Fox News is highly sensationalized - it's entertainment, not news. Most mainstream outlets are similar, but Fox takes it to the extreme.
Why? Fox News is no hair off my nose one way or the other - like I said, I never watch it, I just read the hysterical crap that a lot of Merkins post on here about it.
And for your information, this report was widely covered in a good deal of the UK media including the BBC, The Times, The Independent and others and they too used similar library pictures.
It's not just the picture; it's Fox's entire approach. Why does the photo have to inlude the giant, smack-you-in-the-face bold text? Why capital letters? Why is it an "assault"? Seriously, Fox thrives on sensationalizing stories and highlighting the most entertaining or attention-getting aspects. Highly innappropriate during military conflict, don't you think? Other news sources do it, but if you were American you would understand just how dangerous something like Fox News is; hordes of Americans gobble that shit up and actually believe it's unbiased, "fair and balanced" reporting.
