Arabs shouldn't live with Jews, Shas minister says

Jews and Israeli-Arabs should not live next to one another, Construction and Housing Minister Ariel Attias said on Thursday.

He warned of the "expansion of a population that doesn't love the State of Israel, to the say the least."

Speaking at the Israel Bar Association headquarters in Tel Aviv, the Shas legislator said Israel was in danger of "losing the Galilee" if the Israeli-Arab population continued to "spread" in the North, and mentioned in particular the Wadi Ara area, where he asserted that Harish, a haredi community planned to be built there, was a "mission of national importance" that could help "stop the expansion."

"Arabs don't have anywhere to live, so they buy apartments in places with a Jewish nature, which causes unwanted friction," Attias said.

"We can all be bleeding-hearts," said the minister, "but I think it is unsuitable [for Jews and Arabs] to live together."

Attias used the Jewish-Arab clashes last year in Acre to explain his argument. "The mayor of Acre [Shimon Lankry] met with me yesterday for three hours, and asked how to save the city. He told me to bring a whole lot of haredim to save it," Attias said.

The minister quoted Lankry as saying, "I will even lose my political power."

"He told me that Arabs living in Jews' buildings chase them away," Attias added.

Mayors in the North "are asking me to salvage the Galilee, because this mixture is not feasible for coexistence over time," Attias said.

He said that he would push forward the long-planned Harish project in order to "save" the Wadi Ara area - which has seen "illegal Arab expansion" - by populating the region with haredim, "who are the only ones willing to live there."

MK Ahmed Tibi (United Arab List-Ta'al) lashed out at Attias, saying that "relating to Israel's Arab citizens as something threatening and foreign, coming from a minister in a government that should be distributing resources [equally], borders on violating the law against incitement to racism."

If it is, indeed we can see that the current Israeli administration are indeed bigots of the first order.

No, this is the true face of the Israeli government and their administration. As far as the people are concerned, they're divided on this issue, but the opposing section of the population doesn't voice their opinions loud enough to show this to the rest of the world or to cause a problem for their government.

If you talk to enough Israelis, you'll find that not all of them are ethnocentric.

I spent eight months in Israel and in my experience found the average Israeli, not just the government, to be racist. If you are not Jewish then you are worse than a cockroach in their eyes. I found them to be the most racist, intolerant people I have ever met. Even many of the non Israeli jews that I met in Israel were disgusted by the attitude of the locals.

I use to stay in a heavily Jewish community and I understood very quickly where the stereotypes came from. It isn't everyone, as already mentioned.. but a large majority, in my experience, where rude, obnoxious, intolerant, racist, tight-wads.

My parents actually had very no tolerance for racism or homophobia in my house and they used to make fun of me for being a tight wad (yeah, I used to really exhibit that stereotype). They seemed to think it was important that Jews know each other and the majority of their social circle was Jewish, but my father's deceased best friend was a gentile and many of their best friends now are gentiles.

However, when it comes to Israel, my folks have a real with us or against us attitude to Arab sympathizers and it pisses me off. I like meeting Jews because of the fascination of a similar background, but the truth is, I have very few Jewish friends and I've had just as much tension with Jews as with any other group of people. I had a Jewish roommate in college who I wanted to kill and when I see Israeli and Jewish travelers bargaining to the death over pennies in third world countries, it makes me fucking sick because they make the rest of us look bad.

But gentlemen. let's tell it like it is; minorities stick together in most any part of the world. Blacks, Latinos, Asians, and what have you. Hell, Orthodox Christians and Mormons see people of other faiths as lower then themselves, so why should Orthodox Jews be any different? I see that in neighborhoods all over the states, and the people in these neighborhoods obviously prefer the company of their own kind, otherwise they would be more integrated. I think it's a shame that anyone has to think that way, but that's how it is.

Because in Israel they live in a country (and in certain areas another people's country) where there are indigenous inhabitants who have every right to be there.
