Palestinian Intellectual on the Arab World's Double Standard

"The Arab Mentality is Flawed and Inconsistent When It Comes to Judging Actions and Deeds"

"The Arab mentality is flawed and inconsistent when it comes to judging actions and deeds. Logical and objective [judgment] requires that identical deeds be judged identically, regardless of who is responsible for them. A good deed merits praise, whatever the identity, religion or nationality of the one responsible, whereas a bad deed deserves condemnation, whatever the identity, religion or nationality of the one responsible.

"But the Arabs and Muslims, in their mentality and practices, ignore or violate this maxim, despite the Islamic teaching that 'he who remains silent in the face of [a distortion of] the truth is a dumb devil'...

"Following are some of the main issues in which [this problem is evident]:

    Defining "Occupation"

"There is a general agreement among cultures about the definition of the term 'occupation.' It is [generally] assumed that there is no such thing as 'nice occupation' that should be praised, versus 'nasty occupation' that should be opposed. There is only one [kind of] occupation, and there is no disagreement about its definition.

"[The only exception to this is provided by] the Arab mentality, which harps only on the Israeli occupation of Palestine in 1948. The occupation of the cities Ceuta and Melilla [in North Africa], conquered by Spain nearly 500 years ago, is not mentioned in any Arab school curriculum.

"The same is true for Iskenderun [Alexandretta] province, seized by Turkey [from Syria in the 1930s], which has [likewise] been completely forgotten by the Arabs - so much so that the Syrian regime under former president Hafez Al-Assad approved the present borders with Turkey, thereby confirming the province to be Turkish, and removed any mention of it as a Syrian province from the [Syrian school] curricula.

"This is also the case with the Arab Ahvaz province, occupied [by Iran] in 1925, and with the three islands of the Arab UAE that were occupied by the Iranian regime in 1971. Nobody ever mentions them.

"More than that - there are Arab writers who explicitly endorse term 'Persian Gulf' [instead of 'Arabian Gulf'], and argue that Iran, as a cultured country, has a greater claim to the three islands than the Bedouins of the Arab UAE and the Arabian Gulf.

"Using the same skewed logic, someone could make the unpatriotic claim that Israel - advanced, cultured and democratic - has a greater claim to Palestine than the struggling Palestinian people, who cause themselves more casualties than the [Israeli] occupation causes them. This, despite the fact that, according to common sense and international law, occupation is occupation, regardless of the identity and [cultural] level of the people whose land has been occupied.

"Based on this distorted Arab memory, the Arabs applauded Saddam Hussein when he occupied Kuwait in 1991, [and Saddam] played on the emotions of the ignorant masses when he said he would withdraw from Kuwait when [Israel] withdrew from Palestine. Can any [sort of] reasoning be more primitive and demagogical than that?

"Judging Murder According to the Identity of the Murderer

"...When a Muslim murders a Muslim, an Arab murders an Arab, or a Palestinian murders a Palestinian, it evokes no radical or belligerent [reactions] on the part of the Muslims, Arabs or Palestinians. But when a Muslim, Arab or Palestinian is murdered by an Israeli or European, they raise hell - even though murder is murder, regardless of the perpetrator's identity or religion.

"For example, thousands of pages have been written about the murder of the Egyptian woman Marwa Al-Sherbini [2] by a German man, and she has been termed a shahida. This murder - whose German perpetrator deserves the maximal punishment - raises a few questions regarding the double standards of the Arabs:

"What about the hundreds of murders perpetrated every month in the Arab countries under the false pretext of 'preserving [family] honor?' In most of these cases, a young woman is murdered by her brother or some other [male] relative. He declares it openly, and the women of the neighborhood, as well as the victim's family, greet him with sweets and cries of joy. Who writes or demonstrates against this [phenomenon]? Autopsies have revealed that over 95% of the girls murdered this way are virgins, which means that there was no 'violated honor' to cry over [in the first place].

"What about murder for expressing an opinion, which has become commonplace since the mid-20th century, and has become a source of fear for all Arab writers and philosophers - especially since the murder of Egyptian writer Farag Foda [by an Islamist extremist] on July 8, 1992? Farag resigned from the Al-Wafd party in protest over its alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood in the 1984 elections. He then tried to form a new party called Al-Mustaqbal, and was waiting for a permit from the parliamentary committee for party affairs. The Al-Azhar Scholars Front [3] launched a vicious attack on him, demanding a ban on the establishment of the party. [The Front also] published an announcement in the paper Al-Nour proclaiming him an infidel who must be killed, and some ignorant [Islamist] carried out this execution warrant. I say 'ignorant' because, when asked during his trial why he had assassinated Farag Foda, [the murderer] answered, 'because he is an infidel.' Asked which of Foda's books had caused him to consider [Foda] an infidel, he replied, 'I haven't read any of his books... I cannot read or write.'

"There are other examples - such as the assassination attempt against the [Egyptian] writer Naguib Mahfouz in October 1995... [Egyptian theologist] Dr. Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd likewise received death threats [that caused him to] flee Egypt for Holland over a decade ago. Now the Al-Azhar Scholars Front and [some] other organizations are waging a fierce campaign against the Egyptian Culture Ministry's awarding of a prize to [Egyptian intellectual] Sayyed Al-Qimni and [Egyptian philosopher] Dr. Hassan Hanafi...

"These physical and intellectual murders do not concern the Arabs and Muslims at all, and do not prick their conscience or arouse their fervor. This is because they are murders of Arabs by Arabs, or of Palestinians by Palestinians. But the murder of Marwa Al-Sherbini by a German, or of the Palestinian boy Muhammad Al-Dura by the Israeli army, evoked a torrent of tears, mourning and breast-beating, with the victims called shahids and calls for revenge heard [from every direction]."

Indifference to Hamas's Actions in Gaza
"[Now let us turn] to the shameful Palestinian situation... Consider the following report:

'Al-Zahhar: Hamas Will Prevent Fatah Activists from Attending [Fatah Conference in Bethlehem]

'On July 24, 2009, top Hamas official Mahmoud Al-Zahhar said that [his movement] would not allow Fatah members in Gaza to leave for the West Bank in order to attend the sixth Fatah conference... Despite mediation [attempts] by the Egyptians, Al-Zahhar told journalists after the Friday sermons: "[We will] reward good deeds with good and bad deeds with bad."'

"We should ask the Al-Azhar scholars to interpret this [statement for us]! How many tears would we have shed had the Israeli occupation prohibited [these Fatah members from attending the conference]? Another report stated:

Sounds rather the same as the Jewish cry "" we are the chosen race non Jews should not live on Israeli land ".

The current Israeli prime minister a corrupt racist indeed fits the bill very well. Golani look in the mirror please, then you will indeed see the biggest bigot ever.
Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. And my advice to you is to have nothing whatever to do with it.

This guy shows the same ability to expose the shortcomings of the Palestinians that some Israelis like Amira Hass show on her side.

Good thing there are some moderates who can see past the whackos on both sides in the equation. Not the same as on this forum unfortunately.

Do carry on with the slew of knee-jerk reactionist bigotry though please Toolani. (:

Re: Palestinian Intellectual on the Arab World's Double Standard

Strange how one is not to dispute the actions of a racist extremist mis-administration because it is Israeli, one is then judged as anti Jewish.

A stereotyping exercise in presumption that one hates a certain race of people and sadly well off of target.

Israelis have a right to live in peace as do the Palestinians, however the actions of the current Israeli mis-government are fanning the flames of conflict with the Palestinians thus creating a tit for tat scenario.

Until ''The Lion lays down with the Lamb'' there will be no peace,or is it that Israel does not actually desire peace with its neighbours one wonders. Is the great master plan a desire to steal even more land to enlarge the State of Israel and to hell with the world ?

I suppose you critics of my comments are aware of the boycott started by the world Jewry in the 1930s against German products and services both inside Germany and around the world ?

Check out your historical facts for the truth,it wasn't all the fault of the Germans you will find.

Remember history is written by the winners

The result was sadly the rise to power of Adolf Hitler, the Third Reich and the Nazi regime all as a reaction to the actions of world Zionism

That Zionist campaign was the catalyst to the tragedy of W.W.2 and the massacre of many innocents all due to that Zionist inspired and well conducted vindictive pointless boycott.

Times change but the policy of Zionism does not.

If Zionism is not halted in its tracks and reined in the Zionist and their actions will indeed be the catalyst for the next regional and then world conflict.

    Nobody will win will they.

Re: Palestinian Intellectual on the Arab World's Double Standard

Shocked at Israeli atrocities? Don't be.

Some of you may have seen this clip of a young Lebanese boy in the hospital whose face was badly disfigured today by white phosporous used by Israelis.

You may be shocked at Israeli use of chemical weapons that are banned internationally, or appalled at their reckless disregard for civilian lives or their systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure.

Well, don't be - because it's business as usual for Israelis.
If Hezbollah emerges from the fighting with its "military arm more or less intact ... my God they're going to use it as a victory" [.]

"As long as they don't lose, they don't have to win ... because they'll be standing up to the Israelis and in this part of the world that is a victory."
    --Timur Goksel, university professor
and former U.N. adviser in south Lebanon

Does 'emerging more or less intact' sound like an offensive military strategy to you?

    Not to me.

If merely 'standing up to Israelis' is considered 'a victory', it can only be because complete extermination of Arab resistance is STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE for Israelis.

    No one DARES defy them.
"We created terror among the Arabs and all the villages around. In one blow, we changed the strategic situation."
    Sound familiar?

Those are the words of Menachem Begin boasting about the Israeli massacre of over 250 unarmed men, women and children at Deir Yassin in 1948.

    How about this:
Th[e] plan rests on the assumption that there will be no international forces stationed in the country which are capable of effective action [. . . ]

    * * *

    4. Mounting operations against enemy population centers located inside or near our defensive system in order to prevent them from being used as bases by an active armed force. These operations can be divided into the following categories:
    • Destruction of villages (setting fire to, blowing up, and planting mines in the debris), especially those population centers which are difficult to control continuously.
    • Mounting search and control operations according to the following guidelines: encirclement of the village and conducting a search inside it. In the event of resistance, the. armed force must be destroyed and the population must be expelled outside the borders of the state.
That's an excerpt from Hagana's Plan D, an Israeli military strategy drawn up in March of 1948 that entailed the evacuation of the Palestinian population from the areas of a future Jewish state. But, it reads like a blueprint for what's happening today in Lebanon.

First, they got rid of the Syrians. Then, they proceeded to destroy the "population centers" in Lebanon with OVER 4,000 ariel sorties, driving the civilian population from their homes. Now, they begin their search and control operations to exterminate ALL resistance.
Hezbollah actions such as blowing up an Israeli warship with an Iranian-made radar-guided missile or firing rockets at the once out-of-range city of Haifa have shattered taboos and astounded Israel and the world.
How dare these sub-human beasts on legs defy the supreme power of Zionists?

If you are shocked and appalled at Israeli atrocities in Lebanon these last weeks, then all I can say is that YOU DON'T KNOW ISRAELIS. They are capable of much worse and, unfortunately, we will all see - THAT is, after all, their plan.
"The massacre was not only justified, but there would not have been a state of Israel without the victory at Deir Yassin."
    [--Menachem Begin]

Unashamed of their deed and unaffected by world condemnation, the Zionist forces, using loud-speakers, roamed the streets of cities warning Arab inhabitants "The Jericho road is still open," they told Jerusalem Arabs "Fly from Jerusalem before you are killed, like those in Deir Yassin."
It seems that if anyone has failed to learn from history, it is the world - NOT Israelis.

    Israelis merely repeat it.
The Truth Will Set You Free: Shocked at Israeli atrocities? Don't be.

    Egg think ostrich barn.

Re: Palestinian Intellectual on the Arab World's Double Standard

Many news reports of late have focused on electronic scrap exported to China and the unsavory conditions associated with the processing of the material within the country. A session at the 2003 Going Green International Congress and Exhibition, however, examined the health issues related to processing end-of-life electronics in developed counties, such as the U.S. and Sweden. Panelists addressing attendees of the session “Electronics Recycler Health & Safety Issues” presented information on health issues associated with recovering the metals from electronic scrap; occupational risks related to electronics demanufacturing and CRT glass processing; and viability of recycling CRT glass into lead.
Theo Lehner of Ronnskar Smelter, Boliden Mineral AB, Skelleftehamn, Sweden, began his presentation on profitable and safe recovery of metals from electronic equipment by stressing that the toxicity of the metals recovered from electronic scrap must be respected and that employee safety cannot be ignored. He added, “The U.S. is three years behind Europe in the legislative mechanism and can learn and benefit from our mistakes.”
The Ronnskar Smelter recycles more than 30,000 gross tons of electronic scrap yearly.
Lehner suggested that treatment charges can help to offset the additional costs associated with using electronic scrap as smelter feed. Some of the constituent materials of electronics, such as plastics, generate excess heat in the oxidative metallurgical process, adding to the cost of the smelter’s operation. To mitigate these costs, Lehner said Bilden uses contracts that stipulate penalties, treatment charges, typical compositions, prohibited substances, such as medical contamination, and restricted substances, such as beryllium and mercury.
He added, “Smelters are not afraid of poison, but they treat them with respect. Old sayings are still true: Control the dust, and you contain the problems.”
Gas cleaning units have also been used to keep dioxin emissions well below European limits, he said. “You may have problems with dioxins,” Lehner said, “but you do not need to have [them].”
Lehner was encouraging regarding the health and safety risks associated with the processing of these materials. As evidence of this, he presented numerous charts detailing substance types and their acceptable limits, levels of lead in the blood of the lead smelter crew at the Skelleftehamn facility, dioxin deposits and the annual emissions of brominated flame retardants in the area surrounding the facility.
“Electronics can and are recyclable on a large scale without health problems,” he said.
Neil Peters-Michaud of Cascade Asset Management LCC, Madison, Wisc., presented information on occupational health and safety protocols, emphasizing the impact of operational and training improvements to mitigate exposure to potentially harmful airborne contaminants.
Cascades has been recycling electronics equipment since 1999, having processing more than 4.5 million pounds of electronics for reuse or recycling.
Peters-Michaud explained that while Cascades had previously developed a safety procedure handbook and training program, the company wanted to monitor hazardous material exposure on its shredding line and in its CRT processing facility in order to implement mitigation programs.
The testing in the CRT processing facility measured for levels of cadmium and lead, as well as heavy metals, such as calcium, barium and iron, and particulates.
Levels of particulate matter were also measured at the shredding area, Peters-Michaud said.
Shredding operations began at Cascades in November 2002. The shredder produces a plastic fraction between 4-inches and 6-inches long by 2-inches wide. “One reason for configuring the shredder to produce such a rough fraction was to minimize any dust and resulting particulate matter that would carry hazardous constituents through the work environment,” Peters-Michaud said.
Cascades worked with an environmental and safety consulting firm and the Wisconsin OSHA Consultation program (www.osha.gov/oshdir/consult.html) that took personal and ambient air sampling as well as surface wipe tests in the areas surrounding the shredder and at the CRT processing facility.
Results at the CRT processing facility revealed that both lead and cadmium at were below the OSHA PEL standards. Wipe tests at the facility revealed that the area behind the CRT cutter and the CRT prep table had elevated levels of lead based on HUD standards. Peters-Michaud said these levels were likely from spillage of water contained suspended fines from the holding tank of recycled water used to cool the CRT cutting blade. The tests at the CRT processing facility also determined that lead migrated from the processing area into the break room and washroom.
At the shredder, tests revealed that total particulate matter and heavy metal concentrations were below OSHA’s allowable levels. “One explanation for the low reading,” he said, “is that the shred size is too large to generate much dust in the shredding process. Another is that the operators are located several feet from the shredding point.”
As a result of the testing, Cascade worked with the OSHA Consultation program to reduce detected contamination and implement procedures to reduce further contamination, Peters-Michaud reported. Actions include using a wet method to clean spills and tables; prohibiting eating, drinking and smoking at workstations; and the implementation of a regular cleaning schedule.
David Weitzman of RRT Design & Construction, Melville, N.Y., presented his thoughts on the health and environmental safety of CRT glass-to-lead recycling.
“The amount of CRT glass that can potentially be recycling will grow to over 1,100,000 tons in 2006. Only 45,000 tons was recycled into new CRT glass in 2000. The amount of CRT glass that can be consumed by CRT manufacturers in the United States will grow to only 161,000 tons per year and is not projected to increase. A gap exists that may be filled by glass-to-lead recycling,” he said.
Both primary and secondary lead smelters can use CRT glass as a silica substitute, Weitzman said.
According to proposed EPA Rule 40 CFR Part 260, CRTs and CRT glass will be excluded from the definition of solid and hazardous waste and will make no regulatory distinction between glass-to-glass and glass-to-lead CRT recycling, he added.
If accepted, this rule will remove the permitting requirements and costs
associated with the handling, processing and shipping of these items.

While the CRT glass returned to the CRT manufacturing process has a higher value than the glass that goes into lead smelting, Weitzman pointed out that there is a considerable gap between the demand within this sector and the supply of CRT glass available; therefore, glass-to-lead recycling is needed to help absorb this supply. However, even with both markets, the gap between supply and demand will persist due to the limited number of smelters and CRT manufacturers within the U.S. and their skewed regional distribution.
Weitzman presented a list of the potential pros and cons of glass-to-lead recycling. Among the cons are the high capital costs and the negative value of the glass delivered to the lead smelter. However, processing costs are low, he said.
“Automated glass-to-lead recycling may present certain health and safety advantages over labor-rich glass-to-glass recycling,” Weitzman said. “The history of recycling, as it evolves in each industry segment, shows a bias over time towards bulk automated processing as the preferred, safest and most cost effective method.”
The 2003 Going Green International Congress & Exhibition was held in Boston May 19-22. The show is a combination of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) International Symposium on Electronics and the Environment and the IAER (International Association of Electronics Recyclers) Electronics Recycling Summit

Cascades worked with an environmental and safety consulting firm and the Wisconsin OSHA Consultation program (OSHA On-Site Consultation) that took personal and ambient air sampling as well as surface wipe tests in the areas surrounding the shredder and at the CRT processing facility.
The tests at the CRT processing facility also determined that lead migrated from the processing area into the break room an
