It amuses, and sometimes irritates me to be called farang. I always think it's a sign of their terminal stupidity. Have you heard the "Mai pood pharsar farang"? What the fuck is farang language? They mean English of course. Or the Thai ajarns who send students out to practice English by interviewing farang. I always say "But what if he's German?".

I'm not sure that it's any worse than the assumption that anyone who's from a country east of India is Chinese. When my wife walks down the street in England, she gets "Nee how" shouted at her pretty regularly.

I could care less what they call me as long as I'm getting paid.
But I prefer farang over foreigner. It sounds better than the typical Thai pronunciation of "foreigner."
