PeaceBlondie will become famous soon enough
Is a pom, pommy, or Pome worth writing a poem in a tome, in the right tone?

In political correctness, full weight is given to oppressed minorities' opinions as to what offends them. Black African Americans don't like to be called the "N" word. Homosexuals don't like to be called queers or poofs by bigots. So, if it offends the recipient, don't use it. Unfortunately, most Thais aren't that 'enlightened' about terms, and farang may not be that offensive, anyway. Just this morning, I was swimming in the Gulf of Thailand near three older Thai teenagers. Total strangers to me; we'd never met. I overheard them talking about 'the farang.' I doubt it was an insult; more likely just a term that identified me as non-Thai, probably of European origin.

I wish the Thai people would learn to distinguish farangs by Seppo, POM, Limey, Frog, etc.

Everywhere in Asia there are special terms for whites/blacks/other asians. The terms for white people are always far better than for blacks or asians.

Having lived in Malaysia for a long time I got used to hearing the "N" word for blacks (and they are "all rapists") and that all indos/fillipinos/thais are all "hookers and thieves". Whites are called "Matt Saleh" or "boss" - boss refers to when the white man was the boss!

Here in Thailand blacks and asians get looked down upon. Whites are looked up at as mobile ATM nachines. Same same!

I've been given back up to 500 baht that I dropped two times in the last year.

Once they said 'Kathort', once 'you, you!'. Both times I was pleased about it.

Wouldn't happen in Auckland.

Farang is ok by me. Even if it is a little negative, tons of Thais might not have finished high school so why should they know better?? Why not improve their opinions of us by being a good 'cultural attache' here??

It's only when I hear the nasty variations on farang I get upset, farang kee mau, farang Issarn, farang kee jon, farang kee nok. Even then I just say "that's not polite" and look dejected, try to keep cool, then by Thai standards you've shown displeasure, but kept your self-respect. You can even have a laugh about it with them say 'gob nai galah', smile, and they'll laugh too. Thais love to joke around, you'll get your point across and defuse the situation.

But even then they might have said it because they are unhappy with their own lives, can't afford the car payments, or a multitude of other reasons that aren't really about us. I knew hillbillies in NZ that would blame their unemployment on the 'asian invasion'. Could be happening here too, but at least we don't get bashed here.

I've never felt physically threatened here in six years, even when shaken down by the cops (who were laughing at the time), which is priceless to me, would have nearly been the unwilling participant in a fight once a month in NZ.

Things could be a lot worse for us here than debating semantics.

Santi is on a distinguished road
Re: Foreigner vs. Farang

Hi, to all of you Foreigners or Farangs,
It's my first time visiting here,
Heard so many times, many of you are quiet upset with this Thai word of "farang"
I have search many sources, plus my own observation and way-back study.
Farang is use to call, white Caucasian, from any countries.
Origin of word is, from the old days when we weren't yet accustomed to other languages and its pronunciations and strangers from other countries,
So our ancestors Thais, has made their own Thai version of words, as they have heard and integrated to their way of most accurate way to pronounce, or simplified, shorten.
(The same way, as many Thai call their friends, relatives with nickname, by shorten the names …Jaruwan = nickname “Wan”, Sutthikiet = nickname “Kiet”… etc)

Foreigner (Frank, French, Foreign = for-reine-ner = fa-reine = farang
Captain = ka-pi-tan,
Japan = Ja-pon = Yee –Poon,
(you have to read Thai language of history in related to the outside world to see how we call the name of foreigners in that period , some you may not be able to associate with the real names!)
So, originally and generally there is no after thought of the word, as far as I know, and as far as any educated people using it.
However, many of Thai may use the word Farang with contempt, to those associate with the images of bad manners, poorly educated tourisst, which has strange characters/ behaviours which not really please our way of life!
So, if you are nice and good manners farangs, the way we call you is no after thought.
But, if you are one of those, with bad manners, we might think of you like farang Baan Nok, like all those who come from BaanNok (up-country) and have quiet strange behaviours!

Now, “Farang Keenok” originally is related to a small Thai Guava, which has pink colour when you open it, but why, “kee-nok”?
Nok = Bird, kee = shit, kee-nok = bird-shit!
Because, this Thai guava is normally quiet small, compare to other type of guava,
But why we sometimes (jokingly!) relate to foreigners, is may be because, you have white skin which turned pink-red, after sun-burnt, like this Guava-keenok !
With contempt it may means, too small, nothing important!

Is this true…?
Baang-ma-kok (village which has lot of Maakok (kind of water-olive trees) = baang-kok = BANGKOK
