With Steve Detwiler providing all the offense Justin Wilson needed, the Bulldogs captured their first national championship in a men’s sport with a 6-1 victory over Georgia in the decisive Game 3 of the College World Series finals.
Detwiler homered twice and drove in all six runs, and Wilson allowed five hits in eight innings to cap Fresno State’s wild ride to a title.

Congratulations to the Bulldogs, WAC and Fresno State finally have a men team sport champion.![]()

I used to go watch the bulldogs basketball team in Grant's Tomb when I went to FSU. Cheers.

BUt I think the NIT Champions of 1983 pictured here would disagree with the reporter about the first National Title for a Fresno State Men's Team.
Fresno State to Honor 1983 NIT Champions :: In Saturday's game
May 3, 2008
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State Athletics Department will hold its largest awards event of the year to honor all Bulldog student-athletes. The first annual Night of Champions Gala will be held Monday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m. at the Saroyan Theatre in downtown Fresno. Admission is free.
This event will honor and recognize all student-athletes for their academic achievements, athletic accomplishments and community service involvement.
Fresno State's champions for the last year will be honored, including all team and individual WAC champions.
The keynote speaker will be former Bulldog basketball star Tyrone Bradley, a member of Fresno State's 1983 NIT Championship squad. In addition, two current Bulldogs are scheduled to speak to their peers, women's basketball player Erica Henry and football player Marcus Riley.
vs ...
NIT not NCAA. National Invitational Tournament not NCAA Finals but I think the news reporter could have mentioned it.

From out of nowhere they came. One of the biggest upsets in baseball. You gotta love it.
Too long in Exile, too long not singing my song.
Too long like a rolling stone, Too long in exile
Too long in Exile, baby you just arent my friend.
Too long in Exile my friend, Baby you can never go home again.
Does this make them college world champs?
Ah, Fresno, the raisin capital of the free world....
You know, I've never liked hearing it called Fresno State. This is just a nickname the locals like to use because it makes them seem much bigger than they are (a huge problem with the residents of that town)
It's CSU-F, California State University - Fresno.
The only things I miss from there are the Mexican food, the great olives and superb grapes. Don't miss the people one damned bit.
nice almonds as well. Not as nice as Cal State U Chico my alma mater, but a hell of a lot better in sports. Go Fresburg.
Actually that would be Selma (in Fresno County).
And Dinuba (near Selma) is RasinLand, USA.
Although some claim it is the Big Raisin. I think the correct title is on this sign:
Fresno: The Best Little City in the USA.
And a picture of the Hotel California:
(Do Not Stay Here. Skid Row. At least it was when I left in 1982.)
Fresno: Some have rumored that it is actually the Big NO. Those Tule Fogs were a miserable hell. But in my early 20s cruising along Olive Avenue to Blackstone on a Friday Night in my 1964 Buick Rivera brings back a few good memories.

Loved those four bucket seats and the wood grained interior panels.

so happy, at least one out of many Californian's team sport is a champion today.
NIT's winner is not considered NCAA Champion, it is a consolation price.

Agreed. But the original article simply said National Champion not NCAA Champion. Point being isn't the National Invitational Tournament a National one?
But anyway, thanks for the article. Gave me a chance to reflect on the Bulldogs and Fresno. Damn that Riviera was a nice ride. 430 cubic inches of adrenaline kicking 445 hp. How many cc is that?
And I really don't think that Fresno is the Best Little City in the USA. Take care.
