What's the deal with this sport? It has a fake big time wrestling feel to it. Can these players actually hurt each other in those thick pads? What's the target audience for this spectacle? It's not exactly white trash but it's a long way from high brow.![]()
Just an integral part of the game.
That's a pretty minor skirmish really.
Target group...hockey fans.
It's really the only game I can get very excited about.
There have been a very few coloured players over the years, but not many.
Only really a dozen countries in the world where there's a hockey culture.
You've got to be six foot two and carry at least two hundred pounds to get into the game.
Great game.
---Update---
Never picked up on that.
The fighting, though it may seem like a bit of mayhem to those unfamiliar with the game, is actually very closely watched.
It's more psychological than anything else.
Few people get hurt in those fights.

It's a fast moving game.
None of those fourth down and ten yards to go maximized t.v. time outs you find in American football.
Or two teams in soccer battling to a 0-0 draw after ninety minutes
Basketball...Never could get into it.
Baseball is good. I like the rhyme.
If you live somewhere where's there's ice for five months of the year you'd no doubt appreciate the game.
Although even LA isn't devoid of hard core fans.
It's a gentleman's game really.
Hate people who do that...and there's so many of them...take shit out of context to make their feeble points...
Fighting is approximately 2% of the game of hockey...but you'd have us believe that because you've posted up 3 pics of hockey fights that that is all there is to it...

Why? I understand the physicality of the sport, but dropping the gloves and punching your opponent makes absolutely no sense at all. The NFL is as physical as you can get in sports, yet the minute you take a swing at an opponent, you're gone. Fighting has become a part of hockey over the years for the sole purpose of generating interest in the sport. Fans go to watch the fights.
"I went to a boxing match and a hockey game broke out!"
Really? I was under the impression they were targeting ballet, or synchronized swimming fans.

4 more years!
the thing about hockey is it's too hard to watch , the puck is too small and fast to see it on the TV. So they have to add brawls to keep viewers.
fred
Oh good point. Yeah, that hockey puck ....
Lots of Beer.
WASP or being from Canada.
Lots of yelling and Screaming.
Come from a colder climate.
Used to go watch the Kings feeder team in Fresno. What else to do on a cold Tuesday in December? Not expensive at least at that level.

.
well a trip to Madison Square GArden to see the Rangers back in the day was priceless. it lacked the blunt commercialism of other American sports and quite often led to brawls among sports fans AFTER the game ("hockey fans are all fat nerds" "i'm a hockey fan, punch punch punch") great pub theater.
