    London 2012 - Olympic Football

No Scots for GB Olympic football

There will be no Scots in the 2012 Olympic team
Plans for a Great Britain football team at the London 2012 Olympics will go ahead without any Scottish involvement.

The Scottish FA ruled out participation but have no objection to the other home nations forming sides for the men's and women's Olympic and Paralympic teams. otter

The Scottish FA had been given written assurances by Fifa president Sepp Blatter that taking part in the 2012 Games would not affect their separate identity in world football.

But the Scots fear that Blatter may not be in power in 2012
For my part I wouldn't particularly welcome thousands of drunken Scottish football supporters in my fair city during a prestigious event like the olympics, but one has to wonder what has motivated them in reaching their decision.
    • Are any of their players good enough to even get in the squad?
    • Is it a case of the Scottish FA fearing for their jobs/ perks - snouts in the trough etc. :cake:
    • Do they seriously think the English would want a team Great Britian representing us after the olympics.

Great news! I couldn't stand the thought of a Scotsman in a British team and I hear that the Welsh are preparing to back us up. It's only those fecking noran oirish letting us down. I don't reckon that there would be many Scots or Welsh in the squad anyway.

I disagree with your comment about the supporters though as we have the most well-behaved fans in the world, it's the only award we've ever won!

England and Northern Ireland are in favour, while the Welsh FA, having initially opposed the idea, are now deciding whether to reconsider.
The Welsh are reconsidering the idea.

I'm not sure if any non English would get in the team, although 2012 is a long way away. I can understand their fears for the future, so it would be better to have a team GB just of Englishmen, same same but different to the England cricket team half full of furriners

They fear that it would be a success & that might mean it become permanant, which would mean the demise of the Scottish, Welsh & Irish FA's. It's all about self-interest.

FIFA would prefer a UK team, I understand.
