Government uni job offer vs. Private uni job offer
Hey all, great forum!
I have a masters and CELTA and 3.5 years experiece with one of those at a uni in another county.I have been offered a job at a government uni downtown and also a private university job on the edge of Bangkok. The difference in salary is amazing! The government uni will pay 26,000 for 12-15 hours a week, and the private uni will pay 40,000 for 18-22 hours a week.At both jobs i must be int he office from 8.30-4.30pm!
I have read on this board that some government uni jobs pay up to 40,000....and this uni is one of the top five in BKK i believe..
Are they taking the p***??? WHy is it such a low salary then?
My question is for those who already teach at government unis .....How can one survive on a mere 26,000? The uni is quite a prestigious one, but that alone doesn't help me much with a drop in 14,000 per month!
The only good thing about the government uni is its location....My first job in BKK was in 2002 with a salary of 25,000 and it is now 2006!
Are foreign teachers at government unis a) RICH or b) work at weekends to make ends meet?!
Any advice on what to do, which to choose, and why would be most welcome!
PLEASE HELP!!

Do some averages. The difference in teaching hours is maybe 30 per month. The difference in salary is 14,000. What's that roughly 500 baht per hour. Maybe you can pick up the extra hours in the govt. school.
Also how much will your travelling expenses be to go to outskirts? Vague I know but maybe that saves you 50 baht a day 1000 a month.
Why not try to use one offer to negotiate not having to keep such rigid office hours? I don't know if it's feasible to do so, but I don't see why not...

does either school offer over time and at what rate? "outskirts" can vary wildly. the commute is a key point and we havnt the info to properly evaluate the commute. perhaps you could give us a more specific location for the private uni.. 25 is terrible money and it simply isnt possible to live a reasonable life style in bkk on that money w/o going to your savings on a monthly basis. the school knows this. being a top uni is cool but show me the money or ot or housing or something other than peacock feathers. based soley on what you have said i would go private and press them for oncampus housing or housing money. realisticly though you are certainly looking at needing a part-time gig with the public uni and perhaps even with the private one dependent on your life style and spending habits. hangin. only my opinion.

I'm sure you've already checked the uni gigs thread...
With an MA, you should be able to get an English Department position rather than language center drudgery. That may raise your earnings to about B33,000-35,000 a month for fewer hours. Still paltry I know, but an improvement nonetheless.
I think you should continue your job search...those office hours are onerous unless you're allowed to do your overtime during normal working hours.

tesol j--- read tomcat's suggetsions and I second them, you should do your research thoroughly.....regardless of money and hours, who will be in that office with me?, with whom will I have to work?...some people are complete arses to work with and not worth any amount of money! -period-
talk to the farangs who work at these places get their opinions...
What does your gut tell you about the place... (this gut feeling, usually intensifies over time--if it's a bad feeling, you're in for some "tung sia".

The private uni job is out in Nonthaburi so i suppose i would live out there so as not to commute.
The government uni job seems to have really nice people but i would need to get in contact with soeme other teachers first.Overtime at the government uni is 900 an hour but seems a little unlikely.
Is it possible to bargain for a higher salary with a government uni before i even start work there?

Sure, bargaining is possible....if you wait too long though, you'll be looking else where for work cause some pina will have your job.
dead lines are approaching!!

I reckon you have more chance of asking them to let you leave once your teaching is finished than being paid more???

Most of the teachers doing uni gigs that I know make their wage again doing private tuition for students at the university; 500 to 1000 baht an hour depending on the requirements of the student; general conversation or specific assistance with their course.

i was earning 45k in a government highschool EP program. crap job, crap school. it's amazing that someone with a Masters is earning 40 or less at the university level. i think both offers are crap. you should be earning 65-80k/month. if you can't find that in a university, go to an international school.
what is your nationality? if you go to
http://www.patana.ac.th/BPSnet/Recruitment/rewards.asp
you will see this is a very nice school in Bangkok. primary and secondary.
Salary
The School will offer an annual net salary paid in 12 equal monthly installments. A portion of the monthly salary will be paid in Thai Baht with the remaining portion payable in Pounds Sterling. The initial salary offer will reflect experience and any special skills. Thereafter salaries will be reviewed annually and any approved salary adjustment will take effect on 1st September in the applicable year. Our School's salary and benefits practice is extremely competitive and rates highly when compared to the remuneration practices adopted by Bangkok's top International Schools.
housing allowances are:
Single Teacher: Baht 25,000
Couple (Including Teaching Couples) or Family: Baht 35,000
that's just for your housing allowence. you are looking at a salary of 85k...100K/month plus the housing allowence and this is a highschool.

^ But wouldn't you need a BEd or specific PGCE for that mate??? I reckon you would personally.
And it's not a 'normal' school mate, it's an International school.

You could take 138 and do an up-grade
only in the good ole boy network in BKK.
the high paying jobs go to the (need to know someone crowd)
unknowns are rare! watch your time line!

Usually the government schools have a language center and extensive outside teaching going on. I know at Kasetsart University here the teachers make more than their 26,000 baht salary on outside teaching. I work for Kaset on saturdays and get 800 baht per hour. But outside work like Siam Commercial Bank last year I got 1200 per hour.
Go and ask them about the possibility of making more.
