Who would pay for those international school level salaries?

It's the market economy in the purest sense there - even the governement looks up to the private sector for their salary ranges.

Doesn't anybody find it odd that supposedly educated white Anglo men voluntarily choose to work in a field competing for jobs with Filipinas ?

^ Not really competing per se most of the time mate as they get less money more often than not.

Also and this is quite crazy mate and that, but I think you'll find in this big amazing world of ours there's like teachers of pretty much EVERY nationality....really guv......straight up!

Why what's wrong with Filipinas mate? I assume you ain't worked in the UK then? We're competing with everyone not English there

Ain't nothing wrong with the Filipinas or Filipinos. They've proved their people can teach each other to speak, read, and write English more than adequately. IMHO the Thai people are wise to use hard-working Filipinos if they can get them cheaper than native speakers.

(My opinion doesn't matter anyway about Filipinos ... it's such a huge step comparing their performance in the TEFLer industry to the military )

ah, the real racist SK rears his ugly head from beneath the multicultural facade.
Doesn't anybody find it odd that supposedly educated white Anglo men voluntarily choose to work in a field competing for jobs with Filipinas ?
after all his talk about the military being the great benevolent institution that doesn't care about the color of your skin or your education, it seems these lessons didn't sink in. and didn't you (once and perhaps still) want to be in this same profession where your white self has to debase itself by "competing" with those obviously less worthy brown folks?

well, my opposition to SK is cross thread, cross room, whatever, I'd say it's more consistant than cross anything, especially when he's this denegrating to two groups I may have some reason to like, i.e. White TEFL teachers and filipinos. Is there a "bring all racist comments here" thread I'm not remembring where I should bring his comments? I thought I'd comment on them in the same thread he made them.

    no disrespect, kk :chug:

Lets not go there. You cannot even distinguish what particular grammatical error that was made. Just because they have grammar lapses, it doesn't mean that they are already inneffective to teach.

My assumption is that schools are looking at growing their budget. If you are an Ep you get more money than an MEP. And for the number of heads the come through the door. If a school wants more money, they just slap some letters together on a document make sure the proper envelope is delivered with the document and do damage control after that.

Damage control: We now have more students=solution=we will hire more teachers
but to change to an EP we need more subjects=solution=we will hire more teachers
But that many teachers strains the new budget=solution=we will hire teachers who demand a lesser salary. Usually one native speaker=two lesser salary demanders

I don't think it has to do with race or nationality-just money.

And can't we all just get along....RK after the riots

I think for economical and skills. I think schools are trying to figure out on how to manage their budget. There are skilled Filipinos who are worth being hired. It really depends on the school.

I am Filipino, and I was hired in good faith. And I am getting the same salary cap of our native speaker.

"as" our native speaker or "as that of" our native speaker.

And good for you mate. I have met quite a few good, hard working filipinas.
I must say that most of them were in the fish house I was working at in Alaska.

Wow! I hadn't realised that what I wrote would be so controversial. I think, if you look back at my post, you will realise that I did concede that it wasn't necessarily a grammatical error, at all; merely the difference between Chaucerian and modern English... However, I do believe that if one is going to teach a language, one should be aware of how it is usually used. You're right: just because they have grammar lapses, it doesn't mean that they will necessarily be ineffective teachers. It does, however, mean that they are ineffective as far as teaching correct English to 17 year-olds goes (as the woman in question was doing); and that is surely the point. I wouldn't dream of teaching another language, if I wasn't confident that I could at least write it like an educated native speaker. And, by the way, I believe that to do so, one must have spent at least 6 months in the subject country. As a linguist, I feel confident in making that statement, by the way.

That doesn't mean that all Filipinos have the same problem; I was just relating my experience with one Filipina. I wasn't accusing you all of being rubbish.
So, don't get so offended, and just think about it: how much would it pee you off if a Yank or Brit turned up, and started teaching incorrect Tagalog?

Anyway, even you would have conceded, had you met her, that this woman was a fucking bitch.

I would probably understand for the reason its not your first language at all.

How would you feel a native English speaker teaching incorrect English?
