I've just got back from Pattaya where I've looked into teaching English at a couple of language schools there. I teach at a language school in Bangkok, and they pay (the not very princely sum of) 250 baht an hour for part timers and full timers doing O/T. I'm full time and get a huge 27,500 baht a month for 5 days.
I was shocked when I asked these 2 places in Pattaya about full-time work. It seems that the way it works there is that 'full-time' teachers are paid by the hour, and not a monthly rate. The rate at both of these places was 120 baht an hour!!!
Jeez! I woudn't get out of bed for that.
The hours are between 10 or 11 am and 7 pm. I was told (rather proudly) that if I got 8 hours work a day I would get a whole 960 baht a day. Yes, I can do the maths, luv, but can you promise me the work every day?
So, assuming one day off a week (bollocks to that), I will be able to earn, in a 31 day month, perhaps a whole 25,000 a month assuming I have a full workload of 8 hours a day? And we all know that 8 hours a day teaching is impossible.
Do they REALLY think we are stupid? Or just desperate for any money we can get?
We would rather be ruined than changed
We would rather die in our dread
Than climb the Cross of the moment
And see our illusions die
Bottom feeders! It's always like that though; an attractive place to live (for some people) = low pay. All the free time I get between 14 hours a week in the classroom, I get 1,200 B a day/365.
trouble is down there, there will always be someone willing to do the work for a couple of days to bide them over til the next dole/pension/western union lifeline comes over.
heres a sign I saw just off KSR last year. How much is the teacher making when the students only pay 50B an hour?

I think also some people have been here so long they are bored and the money just doesnt make a difference.
Aj Graham probably does ok for himself with classes of 10 an hour.
Nice and easy as well.
There's a lot of skint blokes in Pattaya who will do anything to extend their stay in that fleapit. 120 Baht is better than a kick in the head!!!
aj graham is a different situation. just a guy looking to help himself.

^^....and who is this "we"? Are you including Filipinos, Swedes, Germans, Nigerians, Alcoholics, Pederasts, Reticulated Pythons, and the odd rodent?
...majestically enthroned amid the vulgar herd...
Anyone you choose to include, mate. But I was referring, in general, to people such as 'we' who teach English for a living.Originally Posted by tomcat

Absolutely. Wouldn't four hours translate to 480 baht? And doesn't 480 baht get you a couple of beers, a couple of hours of connect four, and then a quick knee-trembler on the beach road?Originally Posted by Berty

connect four? knee-trembler?
Brit slang is nearly impenetrable when you're sober.
