To be fair I'm not 100% happy about it myself and I have edited the title of one such job sent to me today advertising four-month contracts. But you look at the ad and the details are there in the description and most people are big and ugly enough to make up their own mind.Personally I think there seems to be a huge conflict of interests with TEFL international advertising jobs which are in fact training courses, I see the Bangkok Post no longer have these type of adverts and wonder when the same situation will be mirrored with ajarn.com.
Are you saying the result of not seeing this kind of ad in The Bangkok Post is the result of Bangkok Post Classified policy? You mean you've actually spoken to someone in a senior position at the Bangkok Post Classifieds dept and they can confirm this? Or perhaps ajarn.com is a cheaper alternative? The smallest classified ad was about 18,000 baht for five days (plus three days free) the last time I checked. And they seem to put up their prices every six months - which is about how often the sales girl calls you.
The worst job in Thailand must be the man who has to sit down with a blue marker pen and mark a number two on the two-baht coins to stop people thinking they are one-baht coins.
Ok, at times you edit ads for increased clarity. At what point does the jobs portion of the website normally edit or perhaps decline advertising for a particular institution?
On another note, Phil, you used to put comments on the jobs ads. Yes, I can understand the time that would be involved today, but why not add some to dodgy ads?
When I was brand new to LOS Phil's coments were valuable.
There is a gap in the market where schools are so desperate for teachers they will use an agency of any sort in hope rather than any specific sensible motive. The downside of this is that many teachers they recruit become disillusioned with the industry here.
They not only move on quickly but spread the bad word. The THAI TEFL industry needs more teachers, not a bad image.
Free adverts (those that appear in the grey strip on the right) are declined for two reasons
1) they advertised less than 20 days ago (you're allowed one free ad every 20 days and that's been the rule for the past five years)
2) the ad does not name the school that it is recruiting for.
Job descriptions are sometimes edited when the salary range in the job description text does not match the salary or hourly wage chosen by the advertiser as the 'display text' (from a drop-down menu)
I'll be the first to admit I don't catch every single one but I do most.

What about the paid adverts? What criteria do you use to accept an ad?
Sorry, I don't mean everyone who reads or posts there...I'm sure there are plenty of concerned citizens, and a good many legitimate grievences but just lately the loonies seem to be ruling the roost.

Phil, was reviewing the thread on Tefl and one of the questions was (I'm paraphrasing here):
Does Ajarn have any moral or ethical boundries when accepting job ads from organizations that have been known in the past to be less than honest with their teachers?
After that, I think thats about it...will try and put together a summary as samvines did that may, more accurately, quote you.
I'm not involved in job ads side of things, and I'm not sure that Phil advertises it much when he does reject ads, but I can think of at least two occaisions that ads have been rejected on moral grounds.
