look when you can make a sculpture of christ on the cross from chocolate as art and call it "my sweet lord" or whatever then so long as it's done in the right way then art or comedy can be granted ... well, you know... of course you might receive death threats from certain quarters but there you go.

1) ascertain if it was harmless or not.
2) if those kids/ the school don't know what nazis were/ are about, someone should spell it out to them.

Not news to most of us this is a Hindu / Buddhist symbol.

It's use in these pictures is clearly not as a hindu / buddhist symbol.

Mate I truly don't know...like I said Spike seemed to get away with it! I know what you're saying but it's our perception as Westerners....if they were dressed as G.I.'s or Brit army soldiers....there'd be no problem and yet (certainly here in Asia) they've been pretty naughty as well!

I'd not have a major problem with my son doing it at his school but then I wasn't born when the Nazis were in power and I ain't Jewish and none of my family fought or were even in the War!

At the end of the day if Thais suddenly become Nazis.....they'd have to kill themselves all anyway 'cos they ain't like the 'pure' race are they?

I personally found Thai Rak Thai more 'offensive' (should that be a c instead of an s?).

i would hazard the guess that more of the world identifies this symbol with the nazis than with hinduism or anything else.

perhaps the trouble is with the report? was it meant as a reference to hinduism or nazis?

I think they're dressing AS Nazis, not actually BECOMING Nazis...but I might be wrong

Were the Nazis good at any point in their career? I only know about them from films and that really!

Mate I don't think there's any doubt that it's not the 'nice' swastika, rather the 'kill the Jews' one.....still don't see it as a super duper problem personally! Now if they actually do start killing Jews and invading Poland and shit....I promise I'll apologise for being well wrong

they considered the slavs sub-humans too. liquidated plenty of them. blacks also. hey! what are the odds that there were no black teachers at that school to witness such a fabulous display.

well a top german tv presenter was recently fired for saying on-air that the nazis had good ideas about parenting. so i imagine the german embassy might hold a view. if they had the facts.

To top it all, this is old hat. Our dear friend z had a lot to say on this thread in Jully already. Left spinning or right spinng Swastika...

Here's a quote from the closets to a Jewish teacher at the school...

Yeah, that day was pretty bad. But I feel my being the closest thing to a JEW (1/4 blood relative) the school has gives me the leeway to say this: It was more funny and ridiculous (how amazingly ignorant and insensitive to world history these people are) than upsetting. I don't have a jewish last name and I don't look particulary jewish so all my life I've heard the nicest whitest people say and actually believe much much more vile and disgusting things. Those things upset me more than some silly 'sports' day event put on by people who had know idea what those symbols represented..

Yes, I kind of know what the Nazis did to an extent mate (from the films)...they killed cripples and gypsies and homos etc. as well....pretty consistent actually...if you ain't us you're dead and that (but then Brit soldiers etc. have been bad as well....shit I don't see people not being allowed to dress as cowboys in America and didn't they kill off most of the Indians there?)! They were also VERY into Jesus and the Cross etc. mate.....so ban him as well should we? Can't pick and choose!

My point is if the Thais don't know this and aren't teaching this....how is it a problem them dressing as them?

To be fair the Nazis were probably the least of the black folks problems over the years....I mean white people in general have been pretty harsh to them for quite a while....so should I like wear a veil and/or hide my skin colour? I mean I don't want to be reminding them of a slave dealer/trader that shipped their great great great grandad out from Africa back in the day

since when was it the jews perogative to take exception to the actions of the nazis. it isn't, so that is a stupid statement in itself.

i can imagine it was innocent, so to speak, but since they are schoolchildren (and schoolteachers) they should be taught this. i don't think it's acceptable just to laugh at their ignorance.

They're not laughing at their ignorance, rather putting it into perspective. This is not Europe, but Thailand, where a holiday is a trip to the Mall Bangkapi, and a hobby is "sleeping."

this doesn't make a lot of sense. the nazis believed in racial purity and went about fostering and raising a "master race" (blonde hair or whatever). jesus said to love everybody as you love yourself. therefore i see this remark of yours as quite silly.

as usual you are missing the point, incapable of synthesising an argument. it is the explicit nature that causes a problem. if they were dressed as germans from 1939 it wouldn't matter; just like, if they were dressed explicitly as slave traders it would matter.

Very true, but most of the time I as a teacher, am overwhelmed by their ignorance ragarding many things from the West, and I'm clueless when it comes to the Thai way of thinking, after being here for nearly 7 years.
