    Thai colleagues: friend or foe?

At your school do the Thai teachers outwardly appear to help the foreign teachers , while later stabbing them in the back? Do they act as spies for their superiors, reporting the foreigners' perceived inadequacies and actual fuck-ups? Do they back up the children against the foreign staff when the children maintain they have been treated unfairly by the foreign teacher to avoid getting in themselves trouble? Do they undermine the foreign teachers' decisions, autonomy and responsibilities in the classroom with parents, other staff members, or sometimes even in front of the children possibly?

...or do they try to work for the same goal as all the teachers, foreign or Thai regardless? Do they communicate clearly and openly what's going on? Do they let the foreign teachers know when there is a problem like professionals?

Neither, they will not even speak to us unless they want something from us. The benefit is that we get to do "real" lessons, not the crap they teach........a student who can't put 5 words together has to be able to make a sentance using circumstances. LOL
Daniel Bedingfield claimed that his new album is what it would sound like if Sting, Stevie Wonder and Micheal Jackson were in a basement together - I haven't got the album so I'll have to imagine the sound of a blind bloke and a Geordie kicking the shit out of a pedophile.

It's always a hard one to figure.

Outwardly they seem friendly and helpfull. But behind the smile, who really knows what's going on.

I always just assume that I don't really know the lowdown.

It's the only reason that i'm leaving my school, can't stand the attitude of the other teachers. It makes me feel like they should be the 12 year old students, they fucking act like it anyway.

Anyway all 3 of their native speakers are leaving after the term is over, most likely they will hire a backpacker or someone from the shithole known as TEFL Institute lol.

The words "Communicate clearly and openly" can never be used in the same sentence as Thai Teachers.

Having said that (and having learned to live with it years ago), I don't have any complaints about the Thai teachers at my school.

IME a lot depends on the calibre of the foreign teachers, especially in the goals that foreign teachers set.

If the foreign teacher's goal is getting paid at the end of the month, and doing the minimum to achieve this, generally this is noted and the Thai staff act accordingly.

However, if a teacher puts in a bit more effort and tries to do a decent job, then it's a different story.

Re: Thai colleagues: friend or foe?

    Hello,
I'm new to this site. I live in Ratchaburi and have been teaching for just over 4 years in the same government school; M1 thru M6. I have been teaching M3 & M6. I have to agree with AO, bet, and Querty2. At my school it's pretty good, but I have heard many horror stories from the other schools here. For 2 years we got our "farang" teachers from a well known school: They hired and fired "farang teachers" every semester, so we got them and they were for the most part fine.
Just as in America, I can never know, friend or foe, in the office; so I just treat everyone as a friend........and cover my butt by doing a good job.
