I think the moral of this story is that some immigration offices haven't got a clue what the law is and there is no one set of rules laid down. OK most of us already knew that but it still drives the point home when you hear stories like yours.
It's both scary and annoying in equal measure.
The worst job in Thailand must be the man who has to sit down with a blue marker pen and mark a number two on the two-baht coins to stop people thinking they are one-baht coins.
