A couple of days ago a long-time friend of mine decided to give notice at his language school, and leave the country to start in another country, at another school. The school he worked at in Saigon is very large, and has a lot of communication problems, and has a reputation for not being honest with the teachers. Everything is run by the Vietnamese there. After some bad experiences with some of the many bad schools in Vietnam and being burned by the Vietnamese, he decided to do, what the locals do: lie.
He planned it all out. He wrote a letter. He got into "character." He went to the school to tell them that he was leaving this week. He could not give the lengthy notice required.
Why?
Because....he just received medical tests back from his doctor. (Lie.) He has....prostate cancer.
He wore a rumpled shirt. He messed up his hair a little. He brought a letter to the manager and administration. He sat down. He looked and sounded depressed. After all....he had....Cancer. And....he had to return to the United States immediately.
The administrative staff turned white. They looked forlorn. A long-term teacher....was probably going to die. A long-term teacher....had Cancer. The Big C.
This soon-to-be-dying teacher had to finish two more days at the school. Everyone knew that he was a marked man: Even the security guard gave him sad looks of pity.
My friend is now off to other pastures. Happy and healthy. He was fully paid. It worked.
Sometimes, sad to say, being honest and forthright only leads one to getting burned in South East Asia.
