Only in Thailand man, if this happened in the USA or the UK people would be appalled. I'm not on a high horse but lets call a spade a spade and stop acting like it is alright. Here is an article from the USA see if I am full of BS. Granted the man assumed the identity of another teacher but same same he was only using the degree he did not earn.

"An Inglewood man who allegedly assumed the identity of a teacher for more than a decade has been charged with perjury, false impersonation and theft, a spokeswoman for the district attorney said Wednesday.Willie Clifton Wright, a convicted forger who allegedly impersonated Robert Eugene Sullivan, an adult education teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District, was charged Monday with five counts of perjury, two counts of false impersonation and one count of grand theft exceeding $150,000. Wright is free on $25,000 bail.

Police contend that Wright used a phony driver's license and Social Security card with Sullivan's name and numbers. Police said Wright built up a mountain of unpaid credit card debt.If Wright is convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of eight years in state prison. A hearing has been scheduled for Aug. 14. He was caught when Sullivan was preparing to retire and officials with the state teacher's retirement association noticed there were two accounts in Sullivan's name."

Lucky Hippo didn't do anything really wrong ,otherwise he wouldn't have colleagues supporting him.

All he did was use a bit of paper (years ago) At a time when there was nothing wrong with doing it.

Right, because in those countries there are standards, which are enforced uniformly across the line. Here, the schools don't care. They want teachers who look the part not who are the part. The schools often collude with applicants who do not have qualifications just so they can get a warm, white face in front of the students. Hippo's school did exactly that.

Besides, Thailand pays shit. How can they expect to attract qualified teachers on the paltry sums they are paying???

since it's not the money, there must be a reason that you're teaching in thailand, panny.

since you think thais are stupid and don't like thai culture, can't think of what it might be though. unless you have thai relatives here?

I don't always agree with panhunger, but he is correct on this, I think.

I don't know about panny, but I teach here because I like it. I am married to a Thai, so I live here. However, I don't need to teach because of the money (although my wife certainly does like money) or as a means to stay in Thailand. Rather, I teach because it is more fun than otherwise, and as long as I continue to enjoy it (and the school I am at still wants me), I will continue to teach.

Just because using a fake degree happened to be a common practice back in the day doesn't mean that it was honest, or the right thing to do. If a dishonest and unlawful act happens to be generally accepted, that doesn't make it any less wrong.

Re: The consequences of using a fake degree: Mr. Hippo's day in court.

As I mentioned before my friend was out on a 30day bail bond. Monday 20th July he is back in court in BKK.

The lawyer has stated he is ready for the appeal, so I will post on Monday evening / Tuesday the result of the second court sitting.

    TB

I am the person who was arrested and bailed out of court as stated above.

Mr. Hippo has stated the truth and if anybody has any quams as regrads to Mr. Hippo's claims, then please be assured that he is 100% correct.

My warrant was issued 3 years ago. it has taken them 3 years to find me. They arrested me at home.

I am still wating to go to the court to have my sentence reduced. Will keep you posted as to the outcome of it.

The paltry sums they pay attract some qualified teachers. They definitely aren't paying high enough to get the numbers of qualified teachers they need/want/desire.

The problem here in Thailand is that many people want to do what is right but what is right by law and what is right for the Thai people doesn't always match up well.

Speaking from fact and not optimistic wishful thinking, Thailand is moving towards following standards, putting in place a framework for those standards and enforcing them. The whole process has been very retarded since the turmoil of 2006 but things are moving forward.
