First, I know this is likely a thread somewhere here. I did search, admittedly not for a long time, found nothing and thought I would post.
If you can reply with a link to an existing thread, that would be much appreciated.
I teach at SUT in Korat, a fine institution with a (surprisingly) competent administration and professional colleagues. I totally love the school, just not the city. If I could stay here, I certainly would.
Here is the problem. I was just told that tenured teachers are forcibly retired at age 60, and contract teachers (c'est moi) cannot have a full-time contract after age 60. Their hours and benefits are reduced to 60% of a full-time teacher. This, of course, despite the intentions of the school and despite the demand for qualified teachers. I was also just told that this holds for all government universities in Thailand.
Where can I find out more about this issue? In particular, do any schools offer full-time contracts after a candidate passes the magic 60 mark? I am now 58 and I know I gotta do some planning now.
The way I understand it, I have the following options:
1. Stay at SUT, take on side projects and hope they add up to enough
2. Look around for another school anywhere in Thailand that will offer me a five-year contract
3. Move to a Matayom and work harder for less money.
Suggestions? Tips? Other threads?
