Hi Phil,
The official word from English First (Thailand) is the following, "We have reviewed a number of our business partnerships in Thailand and taken the decision to discontinue some of them."
When pressed on this further, "EF Thailand , the division which is run by EF Education has absolutely no intention of closing. We have business partners in Thailand , franchise school in Bangkok , which are closing but we are not closing EF in Thailand ."
Can I ask about the rumours about Elite? Where did you hear this?
cheers
Max

I had a friend hired by a language school with the stipulation that he had to keep his enrollment 'up' or else he'd be laid off. Two weeks later he was let go. Now, what kind of ridiculous business model is that? Sure, he's got lots more free time now, too, but I hope language schools that abuse their staff this way go down faster than Pam Anderson on Tommy Lee's dick.
IMHO Wall Street's success is based on excellent marketing and a highly skilled sales team. Furthermore, they offer those 'social clubs' where people can go to socialise and have fun, whilst feeling part of the group. Who needs to discuss 'when to use the Past Perfect Progressive' when you can have a laugh with your new friends? I recall reading about 'empty boxes wrapped beautifully' in another thread.
Maybe some of the more established language schools haven't evolved to compete with the influx of new ideas by some of the newer players?
Yep, and now the lawsuits are piling up...

That article is from Tue, June 16, 2009, but I assume that the court cases are still going. I think I worked with the head complainant and had several discussions with him over the shady way that ELT abused their franchise contracts.

And when people learn to communicate in English, why the hell do they need to memorize grammar rules for the Past Perfect Progressive? If that educational program was successful, then Thai students would all be speaking English like the native speakers. They had arcane grammar points drilled into their heads for at least 9 years of grade school, and none of it stuck. The Wall Street model is a very successful alternative to the same ol' same ol' grammar drill bullshit that never worked in the first place.
Then the Thais need to up their game and be willing to pay international wages for teachers. Thais do not seem to get the phrase "you get what you pay for".
I had several interviews and only one at 60k a month plus insurance. The rest were 20k to 35k a month and they wanted to make a slave out of you. They did not even seem to be the least bit impressed that I have a bachelor's and a master's degree. At those wages they deserve some dread locked topped backpackers teaching for them.

many times the teachers were drunk while teaching and the franchiser only submitted a written apology but never solved the problem.

Without going into too many details, I have recent personal experience with Elite. They have moved their offices and seem to be having cash-flow problems.
I work for another large Australian partnered chain and they aren't doing so hot for business these days either. I think if the market doesn't get its usual pick-up in January then things will definitely be bad.
The Wall Street model is NOT good for everyone. However, it is VERY good for Asians since it focuses on practical usage of spoken English and not grammar which Asians have had drilled into them during school. Granted, not all Asian students learned what they were supposed to in school but most of them did.
Also, WSI uses a mix of self-learning and group learning which is good. It makes students have to rely on themselves more and the teacher less. It is also, in fact, using the most advanced multimedia learning system of any major English institution in the world.
That being said, it has the same problems as any TEFL school from a teacher's standpoint. I think it, like most other language schools, will be defunct in a few years anyway when we have hand-held universal translators.
