i once worked in a bangkok primary school. no shit, the p.e. teacher's work pretty much involved sitting the kids down in a classroom and putting on footie or boxing videos while he kicked back with the air con on...

....Well I teach in a regular government school (public school). I came through an organization located in America called CIEE.
....I needed a 4 year degree to join the organization, but there have been plenty of teachers in my school that don't have degrees of any kind. So I would say there aren't really any qualifications to teach at my school except be white. Also, browsing around some of the posts and numbers around here...it appears that I'm being royally raped when it comes to my salary.
....I am making 20,000 baht per month...and this is after I paid CIEE $2,000 (U.S.) to join the program.
....I teach in an English Program in my school, so the kids have Math, Science, P.E., Art, and Health all in English (then there's like 2 different English classes)
....As far as facilities go, I have a open space (rather like an airplane hanger) that is usually occupied by huge groups of scouts or other class doing some random activity. I also have a gravel parking lot. I am forced to use the parking lot more often than not. Other facilities include a small room filled with soccer balls and those orange cones which I use for boundaries when we play "octopus tag".
....The one positive thing about the English Program (E.P.) is that the class sizes are smaller and pretty manageable. They also have a pretty good English vocabulary because so many of their classes are in English. The bad thing about the E.P. is that the parents pay like 20,000 baht per student per semester...so the paren'ts flip out if the kid comes home with a skinned knee or dirty shorts. I've been told a couple times not to make the kids run because their shoes get too dirty and there is always that chance that the kid could fall down and scrape his/her knee. Basically if I were a ballet teacher I would have a lot more to work with. The kids wouldn't get too dirty, they wouldn't get so wore out, and there wouldn't be any scraped knees.
....I'm not sure about out of school activities. I haven't been approached by any as of yet. Thank Buddha. I NEED MORE MONEY TO DO THIS!

I am speechless, how do you survive?? You are getting screwed big style on this especially when the kids pay 20,000 baht per semester

    Where is the school?

Ouch, it sounds like you've had your pants pulled down on this one. Look at every job listing you can find, and as soon as you find something vaguely reasonable, run for the hills! Conditions at a crap language school would be better than that.

This just confirms my two home-spun maxims for newbies:
    1. Never volunteer to teach in Thailand
    2. Never use an agency for a full-time teaching job in Thailand

Paying $2,000 to receive 20,000 baht a month? It just defies belief.

at least people are aware of the Nigerian scams. Did you know you would be working for only twenty grand? If so why didnt you at least check around for prevailing salaries. You are a good man to have stuck it out as long as you have.
